Είναι ωραίος ο Kalio, αλλά δεν ξέρω πως θα πάει... το 15 ήταν περίεργο.

“He displays things I have only seen in Valentino and Casey”, Manuel Cazeaux told me when we met to chat about his rider, Maverick Viñales. Arriving from the Ducati Factory Team garage, the Argentinian technician with a French surname joined the Suzuki MotoGP project at the beginning of 2015 as crew chief for the Viñales squad. So he knows what he is talking about when he compares Maverick to Rossi and Stoner, two riders he worked with in the Ducati box. “I think he has characteristics that foretell a very, very brilliant future-.”

Having worked directly with Nicky Hayden and Cal Crutchlow, working with a newcomer in the category such as Maverick Viñales meant designing a whole new protocol. “True, but don’t forget that it has been a double debut, because it was also a rookie year for the bike. Suzuki’s comeback after three years off in a category like MotoGP is synonymous with starting from zero.”

Getting familiar with the tires and the carbon brakes after coming from Moto2 were first on the agenda in the adaptation process. Especially the braking technique, , which is very different from Moto2. “There the brakes are used until the final part of the corner,” explains Manuel, “something that cannot be done in MotoGP. In MotoGP, the front tire can’t handle the stress of braking and turning at the same time because the carbon brakes have extremely high deceleration power. The rider has to learn to release the brake as he is approaching the apex of the corner.”
