These are pictures of the most significant new Triumph since the launch of the Daytona 675 in 2006. The Trophy tourer you see here is entirely new, has shaft drive, and is the first of the next generation of big-capacity Triumphs.
Though test engineers have taken care to remove all logos from the bike – even machining off logos from the brake callipers – it is definitely a Triumph. Besides the rider being decked out in Triumph leathers, DVLA numberplate records show that the bike is registered as a Triumph and originated from the Hinckley area, where Triumph’s factory is.
Triumph insiders told MCN that the new engine doesn't carry over any parts from the firm's 1050cc unit that powers the Sprint ST and Speed Triple. Instead it's a clean-sheet design which will eventually replace the 1050 unit – which can trace its heritage back to the 1997 T595 Daytona. The same motor will power a new big-capacity Tiger that will directly rival BMW’s R1200GS.
Engine capacity is not known, but for a bike this size aimed at rivals including Kawasaki's 1400GTR and BMW’s K1300GT it is likely to be at least 1200cc. Any smaller and it would struggle to be competitive. Insiders suggest there will be scope to increase its final capacity its 1400cc if necessary.
