Clive Padgett’s road race team has been given a boost for 2014 with the announcement that the squad will have a new title sponsor - oil giant Valvoline.

The rainbow coloured machines of the Batley based Honda outfit have finished on the podium in 20 of the last 25 TTs they’ve raced in, including Ian Hutchinson’s unprecedented five-in-week in 2010.

It was this track record that clinched the deal for Valvoline boss, Dr Simon Cupples.

“Padgett’s have a helluva track record in racing and we were looking for a winning team that would give us the opportunity to demonstrate the technology and relevance of our products- Padgett’s provide that opportunity.” he said as the deal was signed in the Yorkshire dealer’s busy showroom last week.

The tie-up will be Valvoline’s first significant involvement in bike racing since the company sponsored Niall McKenzie in Grands Prix in 1993 on the WCM Yamaha. Kiwi Bruce Anstey will be the team’s main rider for 2014 as he chases down his 10th TT win.

“I don’t want to sound corporate because I’m definitely not corporate” Clive Padgett said. “But it is great to be approached by a company like Valvoline because of our success on the track. We see ourselves as a ‘mates racing ‘ team and this deal will ensure we are able to keep doing what we do.”

The new colours will have their first public showing at the opening two BSB rounds at Oulton Park and Brands Hatch, with Kiwi Bruce Anstey and Aussie Glen Richards riding Fireblades in the Superstock races.

John McGuinness, who will ride the Valvoline/Padgetts Hondas in the RL360 Superstock and Monster Energy Supersport races at the Isle of Man TT fuelled by Monster Energy alongside his official factory prepared SP Fireblade Superbike, also welcomed the oil company’s backing.

“We will try to deliver the goods for Clive and Valvoline this year. The only problem I see is that these jackets are a bit white and they will get dirty pretty quickly when we’re working on the bikes.”

MCRCB statement - 2014 MCE BSB Championship technical regulations

Over two years of competition under the MCE BSB technical regulations, there has been close performance parity between the BSB 1000cc four cylinder models, whilst the Ducati 1199R Panigale, the sole twin cylinder configuration machine, has not been competitive, never scoring a top six finish.

The MCRCB regulatory body has been successful in enabling the various four cylinder motorcycle manufacturers to field competitive machines, by providing carefully derived regulations including a standard specified ECU, limited mechanical tuning and the imposition of a rev limit which is currently set at the manufacturer's standard plus 750rpm. Additionally certain models have had dispensation on particular components that have been judged to restrict competitiveness, for example the Yamaha R1 is permitted a modified airbox, whilst all others are standard, and the Honda CBR1000 utilises an engine braking/air bleed system to compensate for not having an adequate standard engine braking actuator.

Balancing the performance of twin and four cylinder machines in all Superbike championships has always been a major challenge and not something that can be simply calculated. However the ability to enrichen the spectacle of Superbike racing by having good performance parity between two and four cylinder machines is clearly important.

After two years of experience and data analysis, MCRCB has concluded that twin cylinder machines should be permitted a small performance increasing mechanism. In order to evaluate this, for the recent official tests at Donington Park and Snetterton, MCE BSB organisers MSVR authorised the use of a defined, readily available alternative production specification piston from the Ducati 1199 Superbike range, whilst at the same time reducing the rev limit to 500rpm over standard from the theoretical 750rpm. A machine so modified performed more competitively and MSVR has now recommended to series governing body the MCRCB an extension of this dispensation for initially the first three championship events, though together with a further reduction in the rev limit with a ceiling of 12,250rpm, 250rpm over standard.

Prodigy frontman Keith Flint confirms commitment to the Isle of Man TT races

Keith Flint, frontman of multi-million album selling group The Prodigy, outlined his passion and commitment to the Isle of Man TT Races fuelled by Monster Energy at Tuesday night's launch night for this year's races at the Villa Marina on the Isle of Man.

Keith, who will be managing his own Team Traction Control race team featuring Kent rider Steve Mercer, has been a regular visitor to the TT in previous years. He answered questions from presenter Gethin Jones and co-hosts Steve Parrish and James Whitham as well as tweets from fans around the world who were following the broadcast on the live stream on the TT's YouTube channel.

Keith is now keen to step up his involvement, commenting:

"I've known Steve Mercer for a few years now and he's a great lad. I am a fan who has built a team around passion, the best driving force for any motorsport. It's something I'm really into. I think that the riders that do the TT are a special breed and these guys are true warriors."

He continued:

"What I do is effortless compared to the guys that line up on the grid. We are coming here humbly to do our best and I'm aware that my profile is in music not motorsport."

Keith has ensured that the Prodigy have kept the race period free of appearances to allow him to concentrate on his role as team boss for the TT, which he said was the first time in 23 years that he had made such a request.

MCE BSB kicks off with Byrne edging out Brookes in opening test

The 2014 MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship got underway at Brands Hatch this afternoon with 32 riders taking to the circuit for the first time as triple champion Shane 'Shakey' Byrne beat off the challenge from Josh Brookes to end the opening session fastest.

The hour-long opening session started strongly for Brookes who was instantly at the top of the time screens before Stuart Easton displaced him early on with the pair switching positions throughout the first 15 minutes.

Byrne had a brief spell at the top of the times in the early stages but it wasn't until the closing stages when the Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki rider completed a run of faster laps and pushed Brookes to second by 0.125s with Easton holding third position.

Byrne said: "Generally speaking every time I get on the Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki I have a lot of fun and I then ride it harder and go faster, but for some reason today things just didn't really click. We had a few things to test and if you asked me if I enjoyed riding today I would unfortunately have to say no, but that does bode well in some ways for when we are at that point we will find some more pace. That said, I am happy so far but there is still plenty of room for improvement."

Lloyds British GBmoto Racing Kawasaki's Chris Walker had moved as high as second during the session, however the 'Stalker' settled for fourth at the end of the opener, with his team-mate James Ellison outside the top ten in thirteenth.

Ryuichi Kiyonari fired himself up to fifth on the leading Buildbase BMW as he prepares for his first race with the team; he pushed ahead of the returning John Hopkins on the leading Tyco Suzuki. Simon Andrews had a strong return to the Superbike class in seventh after running inside the top five earlier in the session to stay ahead of James Westmoreland.

Millsport Ducati held a position inside the top ten with Jakub Smrz in ninth with Dan Linfoot on the Quattro Plant Kawasaki completing the top ten.

PR Racing Kawasaki's Keith Famer left it until the final minutes of a dramatic third free practice session to top the MCE British Superbike Championship time sheet ahead of yesterday's pace-setter Josh Brookes as Shane 'Shakey' Byrne crashed out unhurt at the midway point of the session.

In the early stages the riders took to the circuit in damp conditions with the positions constantly shuffling, but the session came to an abrupt end for Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki's Byrne when he crashed at Clarke Curve at the half way point which dropped him to seventeenth.

After shuffling positions at the top with Byrne yesterday, Brookes took his time to get into a rhythm on the Milwaukee Yamaha, but he closed in on Farmer in the closing seconds to hold second place ahead of Ryuichi Kiyonari. The Buildbase BMW rider had been setting an impressive pace in the wet conditions and had been running fastest in the final 20 minutes before holding third ahead of Jakub Smrz on the Millsport Ducati.

Lee Costello was another rider who had a spell as the fastest rider on circuit and the Halsall Biker Gear Kawasaki rider proved the conditions suit his style as he held fifth from an improving James Westmoreland before a final lap crash curtailed his charge.

Tommy Bridewell ended the session seventh on the second of the Milwaukee Yamahas with Chris Walker, Dan Linfoot and Michael Rutter completing the top ten.

Hopkins targets a repeat of 2011 as MCE BSB set for Oulton Park

American John Hopkins has vowed to come out fighting at Oulton Park this Bank Holiday weekend (3/4/5 May) as he bids to claim his first podium finish for the Tyco Suzuki team at the circuit where he first claimed a debut victory in 2011.

Hopkins made his racing return at Brands Hatch, scoring a fifth place in the opening race of the season and then missed out on a top ten finish with eleventh place in race two, but the Californian admits he doesn't intend on a repeat performance as he strives to return to the MCE BSB podium. Hopkins has fond memories of the Cheshire circuit, not only the scene of his first victory, but also where he made history by becoming the first American rider to win a MCE BSB race.

Hopkins said: "I would say Brands Hatch went ok although I was disappointed with the result we had in race two, but we did end up with some good points and it was more than I came away with when I last raced in 2011. We took lots of positives away from Brands Hatch, not least that it was my first time back racing and getting reacquainted to running at speeds of nearly 200mph again after a year off!

"Looking at Oulton Park this weekend I definitely don't want to replicate race two at Brands Hatch again at all this season! I am now looking forward to the next round because I have fond memories of Oulton Park after my first win there in 2011. When we went to the event back then I knew we would be more competitive there than we were at the first round and I have exactly the same feeling now.

"We don't want to get ahead of ourselves and say we are going to win the races but I will be disappointed if we aren't fighting for the podium and in the top five from now on for the rest of the season. I am hoping to replicate what we did in 2011 and I want to be on the podium again this weekend that's for sure."

Yamaha has announced their team line ups for the forthcoming Suzuka 8 Hour race with both Milwaukee Yamaha riders Josh Brookes and Tommy Bridewell selected to compete at the prestigious annual event.

The annual event is the second round of the FIM Endurance World Championship and the July race will feature MCE BSB contenders Brookes and Bridewell in separate teams. Brookes has been a podium finisher in the event in the past whilst for Bridewell this will be the first time he lines up on the grid at the gruelling event.

Brookes will line up in the Monster Energy Yamaha with YSP squad with Japanese Superbike champion Katsuyuki Nakasuga and MotoGP rider Broc Parkes whilst Bridewell will join forces with Australian Superbike champion Wayne Maxwell and Australian Rick Olson in the Monster Energy Yamaha YART squad.

The third round of the 2014 MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship takes place at Snetterton (13/14/15 June). Tickets can be purchased in advance at www.snetterton.co.uk or by calling 0843 453 9000.

TT 2014: Anstey tops Tuesday times with near 131mph lap

On only the second night of TT 2014 practice, Bruce Anstey has set a near 131mph lap on the Honda Racing Fireblade to top the timesheets.

Anstey had a transponder problem so wasn’t registering laps on the electronic timing but was clocked at 130.86mph the old fashioned way and beat John McGuinness’ 129.395,. The Morecambw Missile said that Anstey must have been faster as he overtook McGuinness on the road.

Michael Dunlop didn’t cross the finish line on his second lap, pulling off at Governor’s Dip after running out of petrol but he was some four seconds up on McGuinness at Cronk-ny-Mona on lap two before rolling to a halt.Hi team will have to make some fueling adjustments before Saturday. His first lap from a standing start was 129.032mph and enough for fourth.

Third on the timesheets was Guy Martin, who didn’t get out on his Superbike last night so it is the Lincolnshire rider’s first session on the big Tyco Suzuki and he put in a 129.164mph lap while wily veteran Michael Rutter was fifth with a 128.728mph lap.

McGuinness’ team-mate Conor Cummins was sixth quickest on a 128.719 with William Dunlop, on the sister Tyco bike seventh on a 127.910. Gary Johnson’s Honda was next up on a 127.707mph lap, Dan Kneen on a 125.853mph while Ian Hutchinson’s Milwaukee Yamaha rounded out the top ten on a 125.026mph lap.

MCE British Superbike challenger Josh Brookes was only fractionally slower than his Milwaukee team-mate after experiencing gearbox problems last night, lapping in 124.842mph.

Last night’s fastest newcomer Peter Hickman upped his pace to 119mph while Martin Jessopp put in a 117.385mph lap. Danny Webb increased his speed to 112.766mph.

James Hiller topped the Superstock table with a 126.243, followed by Michael Dunlop on a 125.840. Michael Rutter put his Bathams BMW in third with Bruce Anstey and John McGuinness fifth on a 124.259.

Irishman Lee Johnston was fastest in the Supersport class with a 123.803 with Gary Johnson and Michael Rutter in close attendance. William Dunlop was fourth on a 123.063 with Dean Harrison fifth, lapping at 122.803mph.

Ivan Lintin ruled the Lightweight class with the first and second fastest laps, the former being 117.297. Veteran Keith Amor was second on a 116.814, James Cowton third, Oli Linsdell fourth and last year’s winner James Hillier in fifth on a 114.743.

Byrne leads home hero Bridewell in opening free practice at Thruxton
Shane 'Shakey' Byrne returned to the top of the times in the opening MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship at Thruxton, but the Milwaukee Yamaha pairing of Tommy Bridewell and Josh Brookes were hunting him down.

Byrne set the pace early in the session on the Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki, however in the final ten minutes the Milwaukee Yamaha pairing closed down the championship leader with local contender Bridewell leading team-mate Brookes.

Peter Hickman fired the RAF Reserves Honda into fourth place, showing strong pace throughout the opening session to push Richard Cooper on the Anvil Hire TAG Kawasaki back to fifth. Cooper who claimed a debut podium finish at Brands Hatch dropped down the order from second place with just ten minutes of the session remaining.

Ryuichi Kiyonari was sixth fastest after he had set the early pace with Byrne at the beginning of the session ahead of local team Quattro Plant Kawasaki who were seventh fastest. Stuart Easton, Jakub Smrz and Michael Rutter completed a top ten that featured five different manufacturers.

Η δεύτερη επιστρφή στη Γηραιά Αλβιώνα συνέπεσε με τον αγώνα στο Oulton Park και σήμερα ήμουν εκεί, στον πρώτο μου μεγάλο αγώνα. Πραγματικά έπαθα πλάκα με την οργάνωση και το θέαμα φυσικά. Ο Kyo τους πήρε και τα σώβρακα σήμερα παρά την πτώση στις κατατακτήριες. Για να δούμε αύριο Μεγάλες μάχες σε όλες τις κατηγορίες. Μερικές φωτό για οφθαλμόλουτρο...

edit δεν ανεβαίνουν οι φωτό και επιφυλάσσομαι κι έχω καλό πράμα από τα padock γυμνά και ξεβράκωτα τα εργαλία!!
