BSB adjust Showdown format for 2014

By Simon Patterson -

British Superbikes

06 January 2014 10:45

MCE British Superbike Championships MSVR have announced the first update to their highly successful Showdown format first introduced in 2010, with 2014 now seeing a major change to the value of podium credits awarded.

The system, which takes the top six riders after 9 rounds of 12 and moves them into a separate Showdown with a base score and points awarded based on podium finishes, will change the value of podium finishes from the current 3-2-1. A win will now be worth 5 points, a second 3 points and a third 1.

The changes come after talks with teams, some of whom had expressed discontent that hard fought race wins were only worth three points, meaning no rider was able to pull out an advantage. 2013 champion Alex Lowes was able to lift the crown with a comeback late in the year, winning the series despite trailing runner-up Shakey Byrne by three wins going into the Showdown.

It also means that a race win will remain crucial even after a rider has secured his top six spot, keeping the title fighters racing all through the season.

Milwaukee Yamaha riders Suzuka-bound

By Simon Patterson -307591

British Superbikes

14 January 2014 09:21

MCE British Superbike stars and Milwaukee Yamaha teammates Josh Brookes and Tommy Bridewell have been confirmed by the Yamaha Austria Racing Team for the prestigious Suzuka 8hr race in July.

Brookes, who rode to a podium last year with the Yoshimura Suzuki team, will be joined by new teammate Tommy Bridewell and Japanese MotoGP podium finisher Kats Nagasuga, as Yamaha attempt to wrestle away the Suzuka crown from the dominant might of Honda.

Bridewell said after announcing the deal: "I'm really looking forward to it. I have been able to up my training regime in recent months so I am hoping I should be able to cope with the heat, and spending long stints on the bike, well enough. It will be a learning year for me so I am not expecting there to be a lot of pressure on me. I just want to go out there and enjoy the experience. There will be different tyres to learn but I have already been doing my homework on the track. It should be good fun."

They look set to be only some of the British-based talent on the Suzuka grid, as last year’s YART rider Josh Waters looks set to switch not only BSB seats with Brookes but endurance too, as he takes up one of the Yoshimura Suzuki spots.

Honda will also be keen to see the return of their 2013 factory riders, and reigning champion Leon Haslam could be joined in the same team by Pata Honda teammate Jonathan Rea, who was in the lead last year until a crash from teammate Ryuichi Kiyonari ruled them out of the race.

The calendars for the 2014 Pirelli National Superstock Championships have been finalised with the confirmation that both classes (1000cc and 600cc) will feature at Britain's two World Championship events this summer.

The Pirelli National Superstock 600 Championship will once again be part of the FIM Superbike World Championship meeting at Donington Park on 23/24/25 May whilst the 1000cc class will support the Hertz British Grand Prix at Silverstone on 29/30/31 August, repeating the sensational showing at the 2010 MotoGP event when Josh Brookes riding an HM Plant Honda became the inaugural winner on the then new 3.6 miles Arena Grand Prix circuit.

Both events will allow two of the most competitive, oversubscribed National series to showcase in front of a big audience and World Championship teams.

MCE BSB teams gearing up for pre-season tests
308757

The momentum is building for the opening round of the MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship at Brands Hatch this Easter (18/19/20/21 April) with the teams currently hard at work in preparation for the forthcoming official pre-season tests.

As several of the leading contenders head to Spain initially for testing, Almeria will host three days for all classes on 25/26/27 March before the UK based official test days. The first official UK test of the season will take place at Donington Park on 1 April, featuring sessions for not only for MCE BSB and Motorpoint British Supersport contenders but also the Superstock classes and the one make Ducati TriOptions Cup and the Triumph Triple Challenge riders. This will be the first chance for fans to see the teams and riders on track ahead of the opening round of the season at Brands Hatch.

The teams and riders will then head to Snetterton as the Norfolk circuit holds a further two day test on the popular 300 circuit on 8/9 April, giving fans another opportunity to see MCE BSB in action ahead of the first race of the season later in the month.

Brands Hatch then kicks off the season over the Easter weekend with a four-day opener and ahead of the second round of the Championship at Oulton Park on the traditional May Bank Holiday weekend the teams will get an opportunity to test at the Cheshire circuit on 25 April.

All of the official UK tests are open to the public with entry to the circuits free of charge.

Cartagena BSB test: Smrz quickest on day three Cartagena BSB test: Smrz quickest on day three 08/03/2014

By David Miller at Cartagena Image by Impact Images

MillSport Ducati’s Jakub Smrz rocketed to the top of the Cartagena Pro-Test timesheets this afternoon, banging in a 1’34.3 lap to take him within spitting distance of Tommy Bridewell’s time from yesterday.

The former WSBK star had spent the opening two days getting used to his 199 Panigale and using the time to get setup on the harder compound Pirelli SC1 tyre but then tried the softer SC0, which is still a race tyre and not like the SC0 of two years ago, and immediately went quicker, with four laps in the 1’34 bracket.

Milwaukee’s Yamaha’s Bridewell, who crashed in the second session, recovered to put in some short distance runs and was consistently in the high 1’33s as was team-mate Josh Brookes.

The Australian’s quickest of the day was a 1’34.7, but he was able to put in a run of laps in the late 1’34s, early 1’54s on worn SC1s.

Tyco Suzuki’s John Hopkins and Josh Waters were lapping in the early 1’35s as was Martin Jessopp on the Riders BMW.

Although the team are not publishing official times, Hopkins was clocked regularly in the low 1’35s bracket during the test and has found a good base setting he can take into the season, which starts over Easter.

“I think the test was really positive. We definitely achieved what we aimed to achieve, which was to get comfortable on the bike again and get myself back up to speed. With so long away from racing I didn’t have extreme expectations at Cartagena, but we met every expectation that I had set myself and maybe a bit more, and the base setting on the Tyco Suzuki was really good,” said Hopkins.

“The boys did a great job with the bike right off the bat. We hardly changed anything over the course of the four days. Yeah we made some minor tweaks and adjustments to smooth things out, which helped me to lower my lap time on each of the four days – so yeah it was very successful. It’s a great team and I’ve always enjoyed hanging out with guys from Northern Ireland so it’s been really positive.”

Mercer in action during testing at Cartagena

Team Traction Control have upped their ante in the Motorpoint British Supersport Championship for 2014 and will field Steve Mercer in the Evo class alongside James Rispoli in the main field.

Mercer hasn’t raced a full British championship season for seven years after dipping his toe into World Endurance and spending time on the roads.

“I am dead keen to get started this season and I am really excited to get this chance with the team to ride in the Supersport Championship. I have only raced 1000cc bikes in the past and then when we were testing in Spain I rode the 600 and it felt like a breath of fresh air and it really was great fun, so much so that I lapped quicker on it as I was enjoying it so much! The bike I rode in Spain was a standard specification but I came back into the garage and was absolutely buzzing from riding it,” said Mercer.

“Myself and Keith (Flint, team owner) spoke about it and now we want to have a go at the Evo class and with James in the main Championship and me in the Evo class hopefully we can be a force to be reckoned with in both! Me and James have been spurring each other on throughout testing and we have been working really well together and I think racing in the same championship will be great for both of us and the team. I haven’t competed a full season in a British Championship since 2007 so I am really excited.”

Milwaukee Yamaha have fun in the sun with five day test

312205

Milwaukee Yamaha have completed the first of their pre-season testing, with Tommy Bridewell and Josh Brookes completing three days at Cartagena followed by a further two days at Alcarras to make the most of the Spanish sunshine.

Josh Brookes, making his debut on the crossplane Yamaha, initially struggled to find a pace he was happy with, but says that over the course of the five days of testing he eventually met his pre-test goals.

“The last few days here in Spain working with the team have been great. Cartagena was a chance for me to learn the bike and get used to it in the first instance and then when we moved on to Alcarras we were able to start making a few adjustments. We made really good progress on the final two days at Alcarras and with the changes we have made it felt like the bike was on rails and that puts us in a good position for the next test we have before the first round.”

Bridewell, however, remaining with the team he sat out the end of 2013 with, was able to concentrate on finding a fast base setting, something he achieved despite a major crash on day three.

“The tests have been really beneficial. Cartagena was really good, although we had a small crash which was just annoying more than anything else. I was feeling comfortable on the bike and we had been working through a few small things before we lost that bit of time. We then went to Alcarras and I was suffering a bit on the first day, which we found to be a problem with the forks after the crash. The team rebuilt the chassis and changed the forks and it completely transformed the bike and we made leaps and bounds in progress; I was 1.7 seconds faster on the second day. I am happy with how we have finished up as we are not a million miles off and we turned it around on the final day.”

Byrne fastest on return to BSB at Almeria

312976

Shane Byrne has topped the opening day of the first official MCE British Superbike Championship test of 2014, with the Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki rider lucky to avoid gusting winds that caused teammate Stuart Easton to end his day in the gravel.

The triple champion was making his return to a superbike for only the second time since the season finale at Brands Hatch, and admitted that the PBM team’s testing and development schedule will only get into full swing on days two and three of the test.

“We weren’t woking on anything new on the bike today. We were really fortunate to get out on the bike at the end of November, and we got to try the new seventeen inch wheels then and gave the team plenty to work on over the winter, and plenty of time to develop. All of the changes we’ve got to try, we’ve yet to try, because today is just about blowing out those cobwebs and getting back up to speed.”

“We’ve got a lot to try, hopefully and the next day, but for today it was all about blowing out the cobwebs. A lot of the guys here have already had two or three days testing, and they’re all on the money so we had a little bit of catch-up to play.”

Easton, returning to superbikes as the reigning British Supersport champion, was unfortunate to get caught out with the wind, with the diminutive Scotsman walking away from the accident.

“I’m feeling fine, just a bit disappointed with the wind and the crash. In the morning I made good progress, just getting back on the bike and back into riding the thing. After dinner, I just got caught out with a gust of wind and went up the road, and that was the end of my day. Hopefully tomorrow we can start from where we were at lunchtime and just move on with the development.”

Testing continues tomorrow and Thursday at Spain’s Almeria circuit, before returning to the UK with a Donington Park test on April 1st and Snetterton on the 8th and 9th. Both tests are open to the public.

BSB star Josh Brookes set to wow fans at Cookstown 100
313030

MCE British Superbike and international road racing star Josh Brookes is set to treat fans to a number of demonstration laps on the Milwaukee Yamaha YZF-R1 Superbike at April’s KDM Hire Cookstown 100.

The Australian rider’s appearance at the Co Tyrone meeting on Saturday, April 26 is a feather in the cap of the event organisers, who have already put together an impressive line-up for the traditional curtain-raiser to the Irish national roads season.

New Tyco Suzuki signing William Dunlop will fly the flag for Moneymore team TAS Racing in the absence of Guy Martin, who misses the event to compete at the Bol d’Or 24-Hour race, while seven-time Isle of Man TT winner Michael Dunlop is poised to have his first road race outing on a BMW S1000RR on the 2.1-mile Orritor course, where he won the Open and feature Superbike races in 2013.

Dunlop completed a test on the BMW at Mallory Park this week before travelling back to Belfast for the world premiere of a new film documentary focusing on the extraordinary story of his famous racing family, which is narrated by Liam Neeson.

New South Wales man Brookes made his roads’ bow to great acclaim last year, when he became the fastest ever newcomer in the history of the Isle of Man TT races with a lap at 127.726mph.

The 30-year-old, who will return to the Vauxhall International North West 200 in May plus the TT, bases himself in Northern Ireland throughout the season.

Brookes has switched camps to Shaun Muir’s Milwaukee Yamaha outfit this year after a long association with TAS Racing but enjoys life so much in Ulster that he had no hesitation in setting up home here again in 2014.

“I may be in an English-based team this season in Milwaukee Yamaha, but I still reside in Northern Ireland during the racing season as I really enjoy the laid-back lifestyle.

“I’m really looking forward to getting a chance to ride the circuit, even though I won’t be racing. It’ll be nice to give a wave or two to my local supporters and let them see me in my new Milwaukee leathers and bike before the North West 200,” added Brookes, who has been an interested spectator at the Cookstown 100 in the past.

“Hopefully the fans that don’t get to see us in British Superbikes will come and say hello on the day, and I may even do the odd wheelie or two.”

Brookes will be available to meet fans and sign autographs in the main paddock at Cookstown.

Milwaukee Yamaha will also offer fans the chance to win two VIP Hospitality tickets for the NW200 on May 17, with all proceeds going towards Northern Ireland Chest, Heart & Stroke.

MCE BSB teams wrap up In Spain ready for UK return
313090

Today marked the end of the three day Spanish test in Almeria as the MCE British Superbike teams now return home to the UK, ready for the two official UK tests with Shane 'Shakey' Byrne topping the times.

Byrne had held his position at the top but the positions continued to change throughout the three days, with the teams continued their development work ahead of the opening round of the season at Brands Hatch this Easter.

Stuart Easton on the second Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki joined his team-mate in the final session of the day for some formation flying laps which moved the Scot up the order to second in the closing stages. Easton's improvement showed he was continuing to move forward after his high-speed crash on the opening day that lost him the afternoon session.

Quattro Plant Kawasaki ended their opening test positively with Dan Linfoot setting the third fastest time set in the morning session of the final day, edging out Lloyds British GBmoto Kawasaki's Chris Walker's best lap of yesterday. James Ellison was just 0.142s adrift of his team-mate, setting his best time on the final day as they continued to make further changes throughout the day in preparation for the official test at Donington Park next week.

Howie Mainwaring set his best lap on day two, but continued to make positive steps forward with the Quattro Plant Kawasaki with Martin Jessopp on the RidersRacing BMW closing to within 0.228s on combined times.

Almeria test, combined times (three days)

1. Shane Byrne (Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki) 1m:35.747s
2. Stuart Easton (Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki) +0.878s
3. Dan Linfoot (Quattro Plant Kawasaki) +0.900s
4. Chris Walker (Lloyds British GBmoto Kawasaki) +1.053s

6. Howie Mainwaring (Quattro Plant Kawasaki) +1.251s
7. Martin Jessopp (RidersMotorcycles.com BMW) +1.479s

Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki’s Shane Byrne showed everyone in the MCE British Superbike paddock that he means business this year, by topping the testing timesheets at Donington Park this afternoon but he was pushed hard all the way by Josh Brookes, who spent most of the day in the number one spot.

The former triple champ, who narrowly missed out on an historic fourth title last year, proved that he was comfortable with his bike from 2013, after setting a best time of 1’29.550.

"It was a long session this afternoon and we did pretty much a full race distance and then had time to try one or two other things. I am really happy with the pace we have, running faster than we did in last year's race here. To be back up at that level already is good and I was not out there to finish second! I am fully motivated for the season and can?t wait to get started now as we want that title back," said Byrne.

Milwauke Yamaha's Brookes was setting consistent lap times but it was not enough, and Byrne with his experience onboard the Kawasaki set the quickest time. But Brookes was only 0.1 seconds off the pace Byrne with a 1’29.730, and the pair were the only riders to lap inside the 1’29 barrier.

Millsport Ducati’s Jakub Smrz put in an impressive ride, and ended up third on the timing screens. The former World Superbike contender has never ridden a Panigale before so his time of 1’30.330, means he showed some promise to be a real challenger for podiums this season.

GBmoto Kawasaki’s Chris Walker pushed his way through the pack to end the day in fourth, with Buildbase BMW returnee James Westmoreland rounding off the top five with a 1’30.701.

Brookes’ Milwaukee Yamaha team-mate Tommy Bridewell was a second off the pace of the Aussie with a 1’30.928. Last year's Motorpoint British Supersport champion, Stuart Easton had a solid start with his new Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki, and even though he didn’t emulate the times set by his team-mate he was still good enough for a seventh on the timesheets, followed by Tyco Suzuki’s John Hopkins, fresh from taking a year out from racing – who clocked a 1’31.150.

Ryuichi Kiyonari is adapting to his BMW after spending last year on the Samsung Honda, and ended the afternoon on the Leicestershire circuit with a 1’31.240. GBmoto’s James Ellison completed the top ten. In the first session only one rider from the premier class ventured out on track, because of the damp and foggy conditions. That was Bathams BMW’s Patric Muff.

In the second session more riders made an appearance from the garages. Brookes was the quickest rider in that outing. He was able to hold off the charges from triple champ, Byrne. The Aussie clocked a 1’31.226, with Byrne one tenths of a second behind. Housewives favourite Chris Walker finished the session in third on a drying track, with a 1’32.170. Kiyo and Smrz rounded off the top five.

The 2014 MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship kicks off at Brands Hatch on Easter weekend (18/19/20/21 April) and next week (Tuesday/Wednesday 8/9 April) Snetterton in Norfolk holds the final group official test - with admission completely free to spectators.

Triple champion Shane 'Shakey' Byrne set a blistering pace at this week's Donington Park test, lapping under the lap record, and the Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki rider will be aiming to carry that momentum to Snetterton.

Tyco Suzuki's John Hopkins returns to Snetterton ahead of his assault on the MCE BSB crown and the American will be keen to replicate the pace that saw him victorious on his debut at the circuit in 2011.

Jakub Smrz and the Millsport Ducati team have got their campaign off to a positive start and the Czech rider will be bidding to hold a position inside the top five again in Norfolk, but Lloyds British GBmoto Racing Kawasaki's Chris Walker and James Ellison are also keen to end their testing campaign on a high at Snetterton.

Meanwhile Kings Lynn-based RAF Reserves Honda are set for their debut in the Superbike class this season and Simon Andrews will be ready to use the final test to get their season off to a flying start at Brands Hatch. 31 riders have been confirmed to line up at the Kent circuit over Easter weekend.

A timetable for the official test at Snetterton can be found by clicking here and live timing courtesy of Royal London Watches will be available here. Tyrrells restaurant will be open throughout the day for food and refreshments and fans can also take advantage of the superb spectator banks and grandstands.

Spectators will also be able to purchase advance tickets for both the opening round of the season at Brands Hatch (18-21 April) and the Speedy Snetterton round (13-15 June) from the circuit office.

It was very bad yesterday at qualifying but I've managed to do 4 let's say good laps improving just a little from last year (had the 7th time at qualifying) and then BANG!!! On the 5th lap highsided (I can't remember actually if it was a High or a Low) at Clearways , destroying my bike and my confidence... BUT!!! Again I had people on my side that helped put it back together!!! I can say that more than 6-7 garages/pit box (40 and more people) helped me to put it back together!!! AND!!!!!! HERE IS IT NOW!!! Like a brand new shiny R1!!!!! I've missed the first race yesterday because of the bike but did the 2nd one starting from last place, had good pace, passed 5 or 6 riders and climbed in the 12th position!!! I'm ready for today!!! It's gonna be a RAIN DANCE!!!

=============================================
6th POSITION!!!!!!! Fcking bloody AWESOME!!!!!! And on WETS!!!!

6η θεση!!!!! Με βρόχινα!!!!!!

Byrne tops day one as Smrz narrows the gap at Snetterton
