Crucial race for the STK1000 title at Jerez

Savadori and Mercado are 4 points apart as STK1000 heads to Spain.

322541

Victory in Portugal for Lorenzo Savadori (Team Pedercini Kawasaki), his second win in a row, elevated the Italian rider into the FIM Superstock Cup lead by a narrow margin of just 4 points after the leader since the opening race Leandro Mercado (Barni Racing Ducati) could only manage ninth last time out.
With 50 points still on the table 10 riders can still mathematically win the 2014 series and as we have seen in previous years this is Superstock racing and anything can happen.

Ondrej Jezek (Barni Racing Ducati) has been the unfortunate victim of bad luck on more than one occasion but having taken a win at Imola will know that if lady luck is smiling he can feature at the sharp end. The Czech rider currently lies fourth behind Matthieu Lussiana (Team Garnier by ASPI Kawasaki)

Fabio Massei (EAB Racing Ducati) continues to string together a consistent season that has seen the Italian twice on the podium. The young rider from Rome, Italy, will be joined by former STK600 champion and WSS rider Jed Metcher, who will make his debut in the series by replacing Alex Schacht.

Kyle Smith (Agro-On Wil Racedays Honda), who speaks fluent Spanish could well have some local support in Jerez. Having already tasted the podium Prosecco in Aragon will be aiming for a repeat performance of his Jerez outing last year where he dominated the ST

Jonathan Rea

By Paul Lindsay – 04 September 2014
After an extended summer break the World Superbike Championship kicks back into action this weekend at Jerez in Spain, but the news everyone at home is waiting for concerns Northern Ireland SBK stars Jonathan Rea and Eugene Laverty

Pata Honda-mounted Rea currently holds third place in the championship standings and is on course for his best ever finish to an SBK season, but with only three rounds and six races remaining all the talk is of where we will see the Ballyclare exile racing next season.

Many in the know can't see Rea leaving his beloved Honda, with a potential MotoGP move yet to be ruled out, but there are strong whispers in both the paddock and the press that Rea could possibly join current world champion Tom Sykes at Kawasaki next term.

Former rival Cal Crutchlow, who will leave the factory Ducati MotoGP team at the end of the season to join Lucio Cecchinello's LCR Honda team, has openly stated that he would like Rea as a team-mate in 2015. But the odds are stacked heavily in favour of Aussie Moto3 star Jack Miller making the quantum leap to the premier class.

I'd like to see Rea stay in SBK on competitive machinery and fulfill his world-class potential; and what a mouth-watering prospect it would be to see Rea and Sykes go head-to-head for the title on world championship winning Kawasaki machinery.

This weekend Rea will have a new engine specification on his Pata Honda as he looks to add to his four wins this season.

Fellow Ulsterman Eugene Laverty will also be looking for better fortunes at Jerez aboard the Voltcom Suzuki.

The Monaco-based Toomebridge man is also expected to announce his plans for 2015 in the coming weeks, with a move to Pramac Ducati in MotoGP the most likely option.

Pata Honda rider dominates WSS Free Practice

It may have been an eight week break for the World Supersport competitors - WSS did not compete at Laguna Seca- but the 26 riders contesting the Spanish round in Jerez this weekend were soon up to speed.

Fresh from winning the Suzuka 8 Hour race for the second consecutive year, champion elect Michael van der Mark (Pata Honda World Supersport Team) dominated the on track action ending the day comfortably ahead of his rivals.

Such was the pace of the Dutchman, the second placed rider on the overall classification – Kenan Sofuoglu (San Carlo Puccetti Racing) was 0.527s behind.

Kev Coghlan (DMC-Panavto Yamaha) was 3rd ahead of Florian Marino (Kawasaki Intermoto Ponyexpres), Lorenzo Zanetti (Pata Honda World Supersport Team) and PJ Jacobsen (Kawasaki Intermoto Ponyexpress) who rounded out the top six.

Jack Kennedy (CIA Insurance Honda) was 7th, with Jules Cluzel (MV Agusta Reparto Corse) the first of the riders to improve finishing 8th on the combined timing sheet. The Frenchman knows that he needs to score 4 more points the Van Der Mark to keep his title hopes for 2014 alive.

Roberto Rolfo (Go Eleven Kawasaki) was the only other rider in the top ten to improve in the warmer afternoon session.

Vladamir Leonov joined forces with Rivamoto, the Russian rider ending day one 18th overall on his debut with the team whilst former European Junior Cup champion Matt Davies from Australia returned to WSS competition with Aark Racing. The former full time WSS rider was classified 25th.
