BMW of North America is recalling certain 2020 through 2023 S 1000 R and S 1000 XR motorcycles produced between particular dates.
S 1000 R and S 1000 XR Safety Recall Report
BMW’s Part 573 Safety Recall Report to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says up to 754 motorcycles are affected.
In the report, BMW says:
“This safety recall involves the function of the front wheel lift-off assistant after receiving a software update at a dealer. The feature Riding Modes Pro includes a customizable riding mode “Dynamic Pro”. In the factory setting, the parameter “front wheel lift-off assistant” is deactivated. Riders can personalize this parameter to different levels. After a software update at a dealer the configuration in the riding mode “Dynamic Pro” will be reset to the factory setting (“front wheel lift-off assistant” deactivated). The rider will not be informed about this reset because it is not displayed in the instrument cluster. If the front wheel lift-off assistant is deactivated, a front wheel lifting will not be suppressed or adjusted.”
Describing the safety risk, BMW says:
“If the front wheel lift-off assistant setting is reset to the factory setting (“front wheel lift-off assistant” deactivated) without displaying the reset to the rider, this could cause unexpected handling and control, and increase the risk of a crash. ”
The motorcycles affected by this recall are as follows:

Specific motorcycles affected:
All Model Year 2022 – 2023 BMW S 1000 R motorcycles from 02/16/2021 through 11/18/2022 which received a software
update at a dealer.
All Model Year 2020 – 2023 BMW S 1000 XR motorcycles from 03/02/2020 through 11/25/2022 which received a software update at a dealer.
Description of the Remedy
BMW will notify owners by first-class mail and will inform owners that Dynamic Pro riding mode parameters have been reset. The change may have occurred during a previous software update at the dealer.
As a result, BMW will ask owners to check the motorcycle’s configuration settings in the Dynamic Pro Ride Mode. If the settings have been changed, owners should adjust the settings to their preferences.
In addition, owners should visit an authorized BMW motorcycle dealer so that the dealer can inspect the motorcycle and update the motorcycle’s service records.
Notification schedule
To remedy the defect, BMW will notify dealers and owners of this recall following the below notification schedule:
Planned Dealer Notification Date: 02/03/23
Planned Owner Notification Date: 03/28/23
