ΤΗΣ ΛΥΓΕΡΗΣ ΚΑΙ ΤΟΥ ΧΑΡΟΥ (Δημοτικό)

Η Ευγενούλα η μοσκονιά κ' η μικροπαντρεμένη
εβγήκε κ' επαινεύτηκε πως Χάρο δε φοβάται,
γιατί ειν' τα σπίτια της ψηλά, κι' ο άντρας της παλληκάρι,
γιατί έχει τους εννιά αδερφούς, τους καστροπολεμίτες,
π' όλα τα κάστρα πολεμούν κ' οι χώρες παραδίνουν.
Κι' ο Χάρος όπου τ' άκουσε, πολύ του βαρυφάνη.
Μαύρο πουλί νεγίνηκε, σαν άγριο χελιδόνι,
εβγήκε κ' εσαϊττεψε τη μοναχή την κόρη
μέσ' 'ς το λιανό το δάχτυλο που χε την αρραβώνα.

Κ' εμπαινοβγαίνουν οι γιατροί και γιατρεμό δε βρίσκουν,
κ' εμπαινοβγαίνει η μάννα της με τα μαλλιά λυμένα.
"Τί έχεις, μαννούλα μου, και κλαις, τι έχεις κι' αναστενάζεις;
-Πεθαίνεις, Ευγενούλα μου, και τι μου παραγγέλνεις;
-Σ' αφήνω, μάννα, το έχε γεια και ντύσε με σα νύφη,
κι' όταν θα σόρθη ο Κωνσταντής να μη μου τον πικράνης,
μόν' στρώσ' του γιόμα να γευτή και δείπνο να δειπνήση,
κι' άπλωσε μεσ' 'ς την τσέπη μου και πάρε το κλειδί μου,
και βγάλ' τον αρραβώνα του και τα χαρίσματα του,
και δώσ ' του τα του Κωσταντή, αλλού ν' αρραβωνίση,
ωσάν κ' εγώ παντρεύομαι, παίρνω το Χάρον άντρα."

Κι' ο Κωσταντής επρόβαλε 'ς τους κάμπους καβαλλάρης,
με δεκαπέντε φλάμπουρα, μ' εννιά ζυγιαίς παιχνίδια,
με τετρακόσιους άρχοντες, πεζούς καβαλλαραίους.
Βλέπει μεγάλη σύναξη, οπού ναι μαζωμένοι.
"Για χαμηλώστε, φλάμπουρα, πάψετε σεις, παιχνίδια,
γιατί σταυρός επρόβαλε απ' το πεθερικό μου,
για πεθερός μου πέθανε, για πεθερά μου χάθη,
για απ' τα γυναικαδέρφια μου κανένα νεσκοτώθη."
Και τάλογό του εβάρεσε 'ς του πεθερού να πάγη.

Αυτού σιμά, αυτού κοντά βαστούσε μοναστήρι.
Βρίσκει τον πρωτομάστορη κ' έκανε το κιβοΰρι.
'"Να ζήσης, πρωτομάστορη τίνος είν' το κιβοΰρι;
-Είναι τανέμου, του καπνού και της ανεμοζάλης.
-Για πέ μου, πρωτομάστορη, καθόλου μη μου κρύψης.
-Ποιος έχει γλώσσα να σ' το πη, στόμα να σου μιλήση.
Τούτ' η φωτιά που σ' άναψε, ποιος θε να σου τη σβήση;
Η Ευγενούλα απέθανε νη πολυαγαπημένη.
-Να ζήσης, πρωτομάστορη, κάμε το πιο μεγάλο.
Νά ναι πλατύ, νά ναι μακρύ, νά ναι για δυο νομάτους."
Βιτσιά βαρεί ταλόγου του, 'ς του πεθερού του πάει.
Βρίσκει παπάδες πόψελναν, μοιρολογίστραις κλαίουν.
"Μεριά σταθήτε, ψάλτηδες, μεριά, μοιρολογίστραις!"
Χρυσό μαντήλι σήκωσε την είδε απεθαμένη.
Σκύφτει, φιλεί γλυκά γλυκά, γλυκά την αγκαλιάζει,
χρυσό μαχαίρι νέβγαλε ναπ' αργυρό φηκάρι,
ψηλά ψηλά το σήκωσε και 'ς την καρδιά το χώνει.

Εκεί που θάψανε το νιο φύτρωσε κυπαρίσσι,
κ' εκεί που θάψανε τη νια εβγήκε καλαμιώνα.
Λυγογυρίζει η καλαμιά, σκύφτει το κυπαρίσσι.
Κ' ένα πουλί κελάδαε, 'ς άλλο πουλί ξηγειώνταν.
"Για δες τα τα κακόμοιρα, τα πολυαγαπημένα!
δε φιλήθηκαν ζωντανά, φιλειούνται πεθαμένα."

Του Νεκρού Αδερφού (Δημοτικό)

Μάνα με τους εννιά σου γιούς και με τη μια σου κόρη,
τη κόρη τη μονάκριβη τη πολυαγαπημένη.
Την είχες δώδεκα χρονώ κι ο ήλιος δε στην είδε.
Στα σκοτεινά την έλουζε, στ' άφεγγα τη χτενίζει,
στ' άστρι και στον αυγερινό έπλεκε τα μαλλιά της.
Προξενητάδες ήρθανε από τη Βαβυλώνα,
να πάρουνε την Αρετή πολύ μακριά στα ξένα.
Οι οκτώ αδερφοί δε θέλουνε κι ο Κωνσταντίνος θέλει.
-Μάνα μου κι ας τη δώσουμε την Αρετή στα ξένα.
Στα ξένα εκεί που περπατώ, στα ξένα που πηγαίνω,
αν πάμ' εμείς στη ξενιτιά, ξένοι να μη περνούμε.
-Φρόνιμος είσαι Κωνσταντή, μ' άσκημ' απηλογήθης.
Κι α' μο 'ρτει γιε μου θάνατος κι α' μο 'ρτει γιε μου αρρώστια,
αν τύχει πίκρα γη χαρά, ποιος πάει να μου τη φέρει;
-Βάζω τον ουρανό κριτή και τους αγιούς μαρτύρους,
αν τύχει κι έρτει θάνατος, αν τύχει κι έρτει αρρώστια,
αν τύχει πίκρα γη χαρά, εγώ πα' να στη φέρω.

Και σαν την επαντρέψανε την Αρετή στα ξένα
κι εμπήκαν χρόνοι δίσεχτοι και μήνες οργισμένοι
κι έπεσε το θανατικό κι οι εννιά πεθάναν,
βρέθηκ' η μάνα μοναχή σα καλαμιά στον κάμπο.
Σ' όλα τα μνήματα έκλαιγε, σ' όλα μοιρολογιόταν,
στου Κωνσταντίνου το μνημιό ανέσπα τα μαλλιά της.
"Ανάθεμά σε Κωνσταντή και μυριανάθεμά σε,
οπού μου την εξόριζες την Αρετή στα ξένα!
Το τάξιμο που μου 'ταξες πότε θα μου το κάμεις;
Τον ουρανό 'βαλες κριτή και τους αγιούς μαρτύρους
αν τύχει πίκρα γη χαρά, να πας να μου τη φέρεις".
Από το μυριανάθεμα και τη βαριά κατάρα,
η γης αναταράχθηκε κι ο Κωνσταντής εβγήκε.
Κάνει το σύγνεφο άλογο και τ' άστρι χαλινάρι
και το φεγγάρι συντροφιά και πάει να τη φέρει.

Παίρνει τα όρη πίσω του και τα βουνά μπροστά του.
Βρίσκει τη κι εχτενίζουνταν όξω στο φεγγαράκι.
Από μακριά τη χαιρετά κι από κοντά της λέγει:
-'Αιντε αδερφή να φύγουμε, στη μάνα μας να πάμε.
-Αλίμον' αδερφάκι μου και τι 'ναι τούτ' η ώρα;
Αν ίσως κι είναι για χαρά, να στολιστώ και να 'ρθω.
-Έλ' Αρετή στο σπίτι μας κι ας είσ' όπως κι αν είσαι.
Κοντολογίζει τ' άλογο και πίσω τη καθίζει.

Στη στράτα που διαβαίνανε, πουλάκια κελαηδούσαν,
δε κελαηδούσαν σα πουλιά, μήτε σα χελιδόνια,
μον' κελαηδούσαν κι έλεγαν μ' ανθρώπινη ομιλία:
"Ποιος είδε κόρην όμορφη να σέρνει πεθαμένος"!
-'Ακουσες Κωνσταντίνε μου τι λένε τα πουλάκια;
-Πουλάκια 'ναι κι ας κελαηδούν, πουλάκια 'ναι κι ας λένε.
Και παρακεί που πήγαιναν κι άλλα πουλιά τους λένε:
"Δεν είναι κρίμα κι άδικο, παράξενο μεγάλο,
να περπατούν οι ζωντανοί με τους αποθαμένους"!
-'Ακουσες Κωνσταντίνε μου τι λένε τα πουλάκια;
Πως περπατούν οι ζωντανοί με τους αποθαμένους.
-Απρίλης είναι και λαλούν και Μάης και φωλεύουν.
-Φοβούμαι σ' αδερφάκι μου και λιβανιές μυρίζεις.
-Εχτές βραδύς επήγαμε πέρα στον 'Αϊ Γιάννη
κι εθύμιασέ μας ο παπάς με περισσό λιβάνι.
Και παρεμπρός που πήγανε κι άλλα πουλιά τους λένε:
"Για ιδές θάμα κι αντίθαμα που γίνεται στον κόσμο,
τέτοια πανώρια λυγερή να σέρνει ο πεθαμένος!
Τ' άκουσε πάλ' η Αρετή και ράγισ' η καρδιά της.
-'Ακουσες Κωνσταντάκη μου τι λένε τα πουλάκια;
-'Αφησ' Αρέτω τα πουλιά κι ό,τι κι α' θέλ' ας λέγουν.
-Πες μου πού 'ναι τα κάλλη σου και πού 'ν' η λεβεντιά σου
και τα ξανθά σου τα μαλλιά και τ' όμορφο μουστάκι;
-Έχω καιρό π' αρρώστησα και πέσαν τα μαλλιά μου!

Αυτού σιμά αυτού κοντά, στην εκκλησιά προφτάνουν.
Βαριά χτυπά τ' αλόγου του κι απ' εμπροστά της 'χάθη.
Κι ακούει τη πλάκα και βροντά, το χώμα και βουΐζει.
Κινά και πάει η Αρετή στο σπίτι μοναχή της.
Βλέπει τους κήπους της γυμνούς, τα δένδρα μαραμένα
βλέπει το μπάλσαμο ξερό, το καρυοφύλλι μαύρο,
βλέπει μπροστά στη πόρτα της χορτάρια φυτρωμένα.
Βρίσκει τη πόρτα σφαλιχτή και τα κλειδιά παρμένα
και τα σπιτοπαράθυρα, σφιχτά μανταλωμένα.
Χτυπά τη πόρτα δυνατά, τα παραθύρια τρίζουν.
-Αν είσαι φίλος διάβαινε κι αν είσ' οχτρός μου φύγε
κι αν είσαι ο πικροχάροντας, άλλα παιδιά δεν έχω
κι η δόλια η Αρετούλα μου λείπει μακριά στα ξένα.
-Σήκω μανούλα μου, άνοιξε, σήκω γλυκιά μου μάνα.
-Ποιος είναι αυτός που μου χτυπά και με φωνάζει μάνα;
-'Ανοιξε μάνα μου, άνοιξε κι εγώ είμαι η Αρετή σου.

Κατέβηκε, αγκαλιάστηκαν και πέθαναν κι οι δύο.

ενα μαχαιρι

Στίχοι: Νίκος Καββαδίας

Απάνω μου έχω πάντοτε στη ζώνη μου σφιγμένο
ένα παλιό αφρικάνικο ατσάλινο μαχαίρι
-όπως αυτά που συνηθούν και παίζουν οι αραπάδες-
που από έναν γέρο έμπορο αγόρασα στ' Αλγέρι.

Θυμάμαι, ως τώρα να 'τανε, το γέρο παλαιοπώλη,
όπου έμοιαζε με μια παλιά ελαιγραφία του Γκόγια,
ορθόν πλάι σε μακριά σπαθιά και σε στολές σχισμένες,
να λέει με μια βραχνή φωνή τα παρακάτου λόγια:

«Ετούτο το μαχαίρι, εδώ, που θέλεις ν' αγοράσεις
με ιστορίες αλλόκοτες ο θρύλος το 'χει ζώσει,
κι όλοι το ξέρουν πως αυτοί που κάποια φορά το 'χαν,
καθένας κάποιον άνθρωπο δικό του έχει σκοτώσει.

Ο Δον Μπαζίλιο σκότωσε μ' αυτό τη Δόνα Τζούλια,
την όμορφη γυναίκα του γιατί τον απατούσε.
ο Κόντε Αντόνιο, μια βραδιά, τον δύστυχο αδελφό του
με το μαχαίρι τούτο εδώ κρυφά δολοφονούσε.

Ένας αράπης τη μικρή ερωμένη του από ζήλεια
και κάποιος ναύτης Ιταλός ένα Γραικό λοστρόμο.
