Phillip Island greeted the MotoGP paddock with a full spectrum of
unstable conditions today, as the weather switched back and forth between
heavy rain and bright sunshine. Temperatures remained cool throughout the
day thanks to a cold wind off the Bass Straight and it was a delicate
day of set-up work for the Fiat Yamaha Team. Valentino Rossi and Colin
Edwards, both sporting a one-off red and white livery on their M1s
inspired by Fiat's famous 'Abarth' racing brand, finished the day fourth
and 15th in the combined standings.

After an extremely wet start to the day a dry line had begun to appear
by the start of MotoGP practice, although it began to rain heavily
again in the last twenty minutes of the session. Rossi made a good start to
the day and finished the first session third, with Edwards in 11th.
This afternoon's practice was a much brighter and more stable affair
weather-wise, save a few spots of rain mid-way through, and the riders had
the chance to start working towards an effective race setting to suit
the high-speed nature of the track. Rossi continued to make good
progress and finished the day happy with an overall fourth position, 0.423
seconds from Casey Stoner, who topped the time sheets. Edwards meanwhile
continued to struggle and was disappointed not to find a clear way
forward with the setting of his M1 around what is one of his favourite
tracks.
Valentino Rossi - Position: 4th Time: 1'31.934 Laps: 45
"The Weather today was unbelievable and the track went from wet to dry
four or five times, which made it very difficult to understand. The
conditions definitely weren't the best, especially because it was very,
very cold. Despite this it was not a bad day; we worked well, tried
several different settings and found some good tyre possibilities to keep
going with tomorrow. In fact we tried quite a lot of tyres, wet and dry,
and our level for the first day in this respect is not so bad, although
we will be in better shape if we have a little bit more temperature.
At the end we are fourth but it's okay, especially considering that we
have a few problems still to deal with, including not enough weight on
the front which means I'm not yet fast enough in the long corners. We
have some ideas about how to improve on things for tomorrow. I love this
track a lot and it's always a great feeling to ride here and with the
800 it is no different. Of course today it wasn't the best conditions to
be riding in or to fully enjoy the track, but hopefully tomorrow will
be better."

Colin Edwards - Position: 15th Time: 1'33.965 Laps: 32
"Today was not the day I had hoped for starting out at Phillip Island.
The bike was most definitely riding me for most of today and not the
other way around! To be honest I was just holding on for most of the time
and trying to survive and, try as we might, we couldn't seem to get to
a decent base setting. The bike felt pretty nervous and twitchy and
we're definitely going to have to change a few things to get it working.
Obviously Valentino's doing a lot better with the same bike so we need
to look at what he's doing to see if it can help us. We didn't even
really get to a stage today where we could gauge how good the tyres were
so we've really got some work to do tonight. I'm disappointed because
I'm always so excited to come here; it's one of my favourite tracks and I
haven't ridden one good lap today. Anyway, we'll have a big meeting
tonight, look at the data and I have every faith that my guys will be
able to turn things around as usual."

"Unfortunately the weather has been quite bad at times today and the
conditions have not been easy for anyone. Despite this Valentino has made
quite a good start and he is in a good position, so now we will just
try to keep going like this tomorrow to finalise the best package for
him. Colin has had more problems today and we have some work to do to get
him into a position where he is comfortable, but it's only Friday so
we have time to study the data and make some changes. Now we hope that
we have better weather tomorrow so everyone can enjoy being here and we
can fulfil our potential."

Εγώ περιμένω την Κυριακή να δω τον Melandri.Σίγουρα θα κοντράρει δυνατά τον επόμενο team mate του θέλωντας να δείξει ότι θα έχει δύσκολη σεζόν του χρόνου που και οι δύο θα είναι με Ducati.
Ο Rossi θα τα δώσει όλα , έχει και ένα γόητρο (πληγωμένο) όπως και να το κάνουμε.
Καλά για τον Stoner τι να πω....την θέλει όσο τίποτα τη νίκη αυτή.

Μάλλον θα έχουμε δυνατό αγώνα και σε θεαματικότατη πίστα

Ο Dani Pedrosa διέλυσε τον συναγωνισμό και πήρε την pole position στο Philip Island


Ο εκπληκτικός Dani Pedrosa κατάφερε με ένα ταχύτατο γύρο, να φτάσει στην δεύτερη φετινή του pole position. Ο Ισπανός αναβάτης της Repsol Honda, εκμεταλλεύτηκε με τον καλύτερο τρόπο το φανταστικό qualifier ελαστικό της Michelin, γράφοντας το 1.29.201, πολύ κοντά στο απόλυτο ρεκόρ που έχει ο Nicky Hayden από πέρσι με την RC211V 990. Άσσο στο μανίκι λοιπόν για την Honda και τον Pedrosa, οι οποίοι δεν είχαν δείξει κάτι πολύ αξιόλογο στη διάρκεια του διημέρου, άλλα με σταθερά βήματα ανέβασαν την απόδοση τους και έφτασαν στην πρώτη θέση. Ο Valentino Rossi, με την Yamaha βαμμένη στα χρώματα της Abarth, κατάφερε να βρει τον ρυθμό του και να ανέβει στην δεύτερη θέση της σχάρας εκκίνησης. Ο Ιταλός Superstar κράτησε το καλό του ελαστικό για το τέλος και δικαιώθηκε, καθώς πέρασε μπροστά από τον Casey Stoner στην κατάταξη. Την εντυπωσιακή πρώτη σειρά, συμπλήρωσε ο Casey Stoner, ο οποίος δεν κατάφερε να ικανοποιήσει την ομάδα και τους συμπατριώτες τους στην πίστα της πατρίδας του. Ο Αυστραλός πρωταθλητής, φοβούμενος τον καιρό και τις μεταβολές του, ξόδεψε στην αρχή του σκέλους τα μαλακά ελαστικά του και στο τέλος είχε μόνο μια προσπάθεια να κάνει. Τελικά έμεινε στην τρίτη θέση, άλλα η πρώτη σειρά, έτσι όπως έχει συμπληρωθεί αφήνει πολλές ελπίδες για έναν εντυπωσιακό αγώνα.

Ο Nicky Hayden ακολούθησε τα βήματα του teammate του, Dani Pedrosa, ανέβασε κατακόρυφα την απόδοση του στις κατατακτήριες δοκιμές και πήρε την 4η θέση του grid. Ο Αμερικανός δεν κατάφερε να επαναλάβει τον περσινό του θρίαμβο, άλλα με την ολική του φετινή εικόνα το αποτέλεσμα κρίνεται αρκετά καλό. Πίσω του ακολούθησε ο πολύ ανεβασμένος Loris Capirossi, με την δεύτερη Ducati. Ο Ιταλός είναι ικανός για ένα ακόμη καλό αποτέλεσμα, ιδιαίτερα αν οι συνθήκες είναι ευνοϊκές. Ο Randy De Puniet ήταν ο μεγάλος χαμένος των κατατακτηρίων δοκιμών, καθώς έμεινε στην 6η θέση, τη στιγμή που είχε πάρα πολύ καλή απόδοση καθ’ όλη τη διάρκεια του διημέρου. Θα δούμε αύριο αν θα μπορέσει να διατηρήσει το καλό του γυρολόγιο και αν πάρει ακόμη ένα καλό αποτέλεσμα.

Ο Alex Barros ολοκλήρωσε την προσπάθεια του στην 7η θέση, αφήνοντας τις καλύτερες εντυπώσεις στο Philip Island. Ο Βραζιλιάνος αναβάτης της Pramac D’Antin, θέλει να πάρει ένα καλό αποτέλεσμα, καθώς δεν έχει εξασφαλίσει για την επόμενη χρονιά μια θέση στο MotoGP, κάτι που του δίνει μεγάλο κίνητρο να τα δώσει όλα. Καλή επίδοση και για τον Shinya Nakano, ο οποίος σε μια από τις τελευταίες του εμφανίσεις στην ομάδα της Konica Minolta Honda, κατάφερε να ανέβει στην 8η θέση της κατάταξης και αύριο θα θελήσει να κάνει έναν καλό αγώνα. Στην πρώτη δεκάδα μπήκε ο εκπληκτικός Sylvain Guintoli με την Dunlop Yamaha Tech3, ενώ ο Anthony West την συμπλήρωσε, σε ένα πολύ καλό αποτέλεσμα για τον ίδιο και την ομάδα της Kawasaki.

Καταστροφικό διήμερο για τους αναβάτες της Rizla Suzuki, οι οποίοι έμειναν εκτός δεκάδας για πρώτη φορά φέτος. Τόσο ο John Hopkins(14oς), άλλα κυρίως ο Chris Vermeulen(16ος), δεν κατάφεραν σε κανένα σημείο του session να βρούνε τον ρυθμό τους, απογοητεύοντας τους φίλους της ομάδας άλλα και τους συμπατριώτες του Vermeulen. Στην ίδια κατάσταση βρέθηκαν και οι αναβάτες της Honda Gresini, με τους Melandri και Elias να μένουν στις 12η και 18η θέση αντίστοιχα. Αύριο ο αγώνας του MotoGP ξεκινάει στις 8 ώρα Ελλάδος.

Καγκουρό με… Ducati
Ο Casey Stoner το είπε και το έκανε στο Philip Island κατακτώντας άνετα την 9η φετινή του νίκη


Κάτι ήξερε ο Casey Stoner όταν χθες κρυφογέλαγε στη συνέντευξη Τύπου και δήλωνε, σχεδόν σίγουρος, ότι μπορεί να κερδίσει στην πατρίδα του. Το ίδιο και οι άνθρωποι της Ducati, οι οποίοι παρέδωσαν στον Αυστραλό το καλύτερο δυνατό πακέτο και φυσικά τους αξίζει ένα μεγάλο μπράβο. Ο πρωταθλητής ξεκίνησε πολύ δυνατά και διατήρησε ένα απίστευτο γυρολόγιο σε όλη τη διάρκεια του αγώνα, κάτι που τον βοήθησε να απομακρυνθεί από τους υπόλοιπους στο δεύτερο μισό του αγώνα. Ο Nicky Hayden προσπάθησε να ακολουθήσει τον Stoner, άλλα η εργοστασιακή Honda είχε αντίθετη άποψη. Εγκατέλειψε από μηχανική βλάβη, τη στιγμή που φαινόταν ο μόνος που μπορούσε να πιέσει τον πρωτοπόρο, χάνοντας με αυτόν τον τρόπο μια καλή ευκαιρία να διακριθεί. Στο βάθρο για δεύτερη συνεχή φορά ανέβηκε ο Loris Capirossi, ο οποίος πήρε το μέγιστο από την Desmosedici του και πέρασε τον Valentino Rossi στους τελευταίους γύρους. Ο βετεράνος Ιταλός στα μέσα του αγώνα έβαλε το κεφάλι κάτω, πέρασε διαδοχικά τους, Melandri, Pedrosa και έφτασε πίσω τον φίλο του Valentino Rossi, με τον οποίο πάλεψε για τη δεύτερη θέση. Ο «Γιατρός» δεν κατάφερε να κάνει καλή εκκίνηση και έμεινε γρήγορα πίσω, άλλα βρήκε το ρυθμό του και άρχισε να πιέζει τη μοτοσικλέτα του. Φυσικά η πρώτη θέση ήταν απλά ένα όνειρο, έτσι αρκέστηκε στη μάχη της δεύτερης με τον Capirossi. Παρόλα αυτά ο Ιταλός δεν έχασε το χιούμορ του, και στο βάθρο πρότεινε στο Casey Stoner να κάνει stage diving, μπροστά στο πλήθος που είχε μαζευτεί να τον αποθεώσει. Ας δούμε όμως τι έγινε στον αγώνα.

Παράσταση για ένα ρόλο

Πρώτος στρίβει ο Stoner, με δεύτερο τον πολύ δυνατό Hayden και τρίτο τον Pedrosa. Ο Rossi χάνει θέσεις και μένει στην 4η, ενώ πίσω του είναι οι Melandri και Capirossi. Μπροστά ο Hayden δεν αφήνει τον Stoner να ξεφύγει, ενώ ο Rossi περνάει τον Pedrosa, ενώ και ο Melandri αυξάνει τον ρυθμό του. Η μάχη έχει ανάψει μεταξύ Melandri και Pedrosa, οι οποίοι επιτίθενται συνεχώς ο ένας στον άλλο. Ο Rossiανεβάζει τον ρυθμό του και γράφει τον ταχύτερο γύρο στο 7ο πέρασμα, ενώ την ίδια στιγμή ο Barros περνάει τον Hopkins στην 7η θέση. Ο Hayden αρχίζει να χάνει έδαφος έχοντας καταστρέψει τα ελαστικά του, δίνοντας την ευκαιρία στον Rossi να τον φτάσει και να τον περάσει στον 10ο γύρο. Άτυχη στιγμή στον 12ο γύρο για τον Hayden, ο οποίος εγκαταλείπει από μηχανική βλάβη στην RC212V. Οι αναβάτες της Michelin σε αυτό το σημείο αρχίζουν να αντιμετωπίζουν προβλήματα, ενώ ο Melandri με τον Capirossi ροκανίζουν την διαφορά από τους Pedrosa και Rossi. Παρόλα αυτά ο Melandri κάνει ένα λάθος και χάνει τον ρυθμό του, άλλα και τη θέση του από τον Capirossi. Δέκα γύρους πριν το τέλος ο Pedrosa περνάει τον Rossi, ενώ έχει κολλήσει από πίσω τους ο Capirossi. Ο Ιταλός βετεράνος καταφέρνει να περάσει και τους δυο στην πρώτη στροφή Doohan, κάνοντας «1-2» προς στιγμήν για την Ducati, ενώ πιο πίσω ο Barros σε μια καταπληκτική εμφάνιση αφήνει τον Melandri στην 6η θέση.

Μεγάλη μέρα για την Ducati

Ο Alex Barros κατάφερε μετά από μια πολύ καλή εμφάνιση να ανέβει στην 5η θέση. Ο Βραζιλιάνος είχε πάρα πολύ καιρό να μπει στην πρώτη εξάδα, και το έκανε σε ένα πολύ κρίσιμο σημείο της χρονιάς, όταν δηλαδή ψ’αχνει να βρει ομάδα για την επόμενη σεζόν στο MotoGP. Την εξάδα συμπλήρωσε ο Randy De Puniet με την Kawasaki. Ο Γάλλος έκανε έναν πολύ μοναχικό αγώνα, χωρίς να απειληθεί ή να απειλήσει κανέναν, διατηρόντας το καλό σερί τερματισμών του. Ο John Hopkins διέσωσε την ομάδα της Rizla Suzuki, σε ακόμη ένα πολύ κακό διήμερο για τους «γαλάζιους». Ο Αμερικανός έκανε καταπληκτική εκκίνηση και προσπάθησε να ακολουθήσει τον ρυθμό των πρώτων άλλα χωρίς αποτέλεσμα, καθώς η μοτοσικλέτα του δεν ανταποκρίθηκε στις απαιτήσεις της πίστας.

Πίσω του ήταν ο teammate του Chris Vemeulen, ο οποίος είχε μάχη με τον συμπατριώτη του Anthony West, ενώ την δεκάδα έκλεισαν οι Colin Edwards και Marco Melandri, ο οποίος κατάστρεψε τα ελαστικά του στην προσπάθεια να περάσει τον Dani Pedrosa στο πρώτο μισό του αγώνα. Ο Anthony West τελικά υποχώρησε στην 12η θέση, ενώ πιο πίσω ήταν οι Nakano (13ος) και Elias (15ος). Τα δυο Yamaha Tech3 των Guintoli και Tamada έμειναν στις 14η και 16η θέση αντίστοιχα. Ducati celebrate perfect title trilogy.

A perfect one-two finish for Casey Stoner and Loris Capirossi in Sunday's Australian Grand Prix assured Ducati of an equally perfect sweep of the 2007 riders', teams' and manufacturers' world championships.

With Stoner having lifted his debut riders' title at the previous Japanese round, Ducatiwrapped up the two remaining crowns - two rounds early - when Stoner and Capirossi delivered the factory's first one-two of the season, and second ever after Valencia 2006.

"Winning the constructors' and teams' titles confirms and strengthens the value of the goal conquered three weeks ago by Casey," said Gabriele Del Torchio, CEO of Ducati Motor Holding. "We have a great team of men and women who, with courage and warmth, have made a dream come true."

Ducati is the first non-Japanese manufacturer to win the premier-class constructors' title since MV Agusta in 1973.

Stoner: Just unbelievable!

Fresh from lifting the his first world title last time out in Japan, Casey Stoner capped an unforgettable season with his first home victory in Sunday's Australian Grand Prix.

The Ducatistar was untouchable from lap 10 of 27 onwards as he accelerated to his ninth victory of the season by 6.7secs over team-mate Loris Capirossi - handing Ducati the 2007 teams' and manufacturers' world championships in the process.

"Being up on the podium was just unbelievable, I've never felt anything like it," said Stoner, whose home fans packed the start-finish straight to cheer their hero on the podium.

"I've been working very hard for a lot of years trying to win here. This whole season has been magical for us, we came here with a lot less pressure after winning the title in Japan, so I could really enjoy this race. It's definitely my best victory so far. I have to thank the Australian fans, it's good to see so many of them here and I hope they've had a lot of fun, I really appreciate it.

I made one of my best starts, I had the first corner to myself so I could concentrate on getting the tyres warmed up and ready to go," recalled Casey. "Nicky [Hayden] was really pushing in the beginning, he was on my rear wheel for a while but I managed to get away. I was really hoping, more than ever, that Loris would get on the podium here, so it's been another great weekend for the team and for Ducati."

"My start wasn't really good, so in the early laps I had to fight a lot with Marco [Melandri] and in my opinion he was little bit too aggressive," said Capirossi. "I had to push really hard to overtake him and then I said 'please take it easy'. After that I tried to keep my pace and I finished second, so I'm really, really happy and a big thanks to my team who worked so hard all weekend.

"This is another great moment, especially after my win at Motegi. I am trying to end my five years with Ducati in the best way possible," said the Future Suzuki rider. "Ducati has won everything this year - the riders', constructors' and teams' championships, which proves that everything's working 100 per cent at the factory."

Valentino Rossi set to race on Bridgestone in 2008

Valentino Rossi seems certain to race on Bridgestone tyres next season even though a controversial one-make tyre rule won’t be implemented for 2008.

MCN understands the Italian will be the lone Yamaha rider on Bridgestone rubber next season, with new team-mate Jorge Lorenzo and Tech 3 duo Colin Edwards and James Toseland running Michelin tyres on their YZR-M1 800cc machines.

The shock revelation about Rossi and Bridgestone follows news that a one-make tyre rule seems certain to be rejected at a meeting of the Grand Prix Commission in Malaysia a week today (October 20).

That won’t stop Rossi though from getting his wish of dumping Michelin, with the 28-year-old expected to run on Bridgestone tyres in a split garage, with new team-mate Lorenzo to run on Michelin.

With Honda and Yamaha both being refused Bridgestone tyre deals in 2008 following requests made earlier this season, it looked likely that both factory teams would remain loyal to Michelin to avoid a one-make tyre rule being implemented.

But Rossi seems likely to strike a deal to exclusively run Bridgestone, while Dani Pedrosa will field Michelin tyres on his factory Honda RC212V contender.

Not even the promise of a huge increase in investment and resources has convinced Rossi to remain with Michelin, such is his desire to race on the same rubber as new world champion Casey Stoner.

In the front row press conference this afternoon in Australia, Rossi said it was still not decided what tyre brand he would be on next season. But he said that the option to run Bridgestone was still work in progress, hinting that he will be with the Japanese factory.

That’s despite Honda and Yamaha’s commitment to stay with Michelin, having initially voiced grave reservations to Dorna chief Carmelo Ezpeleta about remaining with the French brand.

“The situation is not very clear for us because we wait for Michelin to give a big effort next year to improve the situation, they understand a lot of mistakes this and especially with the new rule this year it was a bad surprise for Michelin. I think the French guys, in the head, the situation is not so bad but we had a lot of problems so we have to decide because we do not know exactly if it is possible to have Bridgestone. The situation is in progress, we have to decide, "said Rossi.

The news appeared to be a massive shock to Lorenzo, who sat alongside Rossi in the press conference.
He avoided the issue when asked, saying he was only concerned about his Dunlop tyres for tomorrow’s 250 race, where he can clinch his second successive world title.

Yamaha boss Davide Brivio told MCN no request had been submitted to Bridgestone to supply tyres exclusively to the seven-times world champion and no other Yamaha rider.

Bridgestone boss Hiroshi Yamada towed the same line, but he said increasing its current capacity by one more rider was achievable, particularly given that the rider involved is Rossi.

O παγκόσμιος πρωταθλητής MotoGP Casey Stoner δήλωσε ότι η νίκη στον αγώνα της πατρίδας του ήταν στόχος του για πολλά χρόνια.

Αγωνιζόμενος για δεύτερη χρονιά στη μεγάλη κατηγορία ο Αυστραλός εξέπληξε τον κόσμο των MotoGP με εννέα νίκες από τις 16 εκκινήσεις που έχει πάρει , αλλά όπως είπε η νίκη μέσα στην πατρίδα του ήταν η μεγαλύτερη επιτυχία του από οτιδήποτε άλλο.

Ducati not worried about Valentino Rossi on Bridgestone tyres

Ducati boss Livio Suppo said the prospect of seeing Valentino Rossi go to head-to-head with new world champion Casey Stoner on Bridgestone tyres in 2008 held no fears for the Aussie star.

With Rossi seeming certain to run on Bridgestone rubber next season, Stoner said that it would at least take away the excuses if he continued to dominate the Italian again.

And Marlboro Ducati team boss Suppo, “I think it would be interesting to see Casey fighting with the best riders in the world anyway.

"I believe if you look at this world championship with a realistic view there was not Bridgestone domination, but a Casey, Ducati and Bridgestone domination.

"I understand Casey from a rider point of view because everybody said that he was winning because he had the speed at the start of the season.

"After that he was only winning because of the tyres and it looks like nobody wants to admit that the best rider at the moment is Casey. He deserves the title and I totally understand his position because he wants to prove he is the best.

"At the beginning of this world championship everybody thought it was going to be only a fight between Dani Pedrosa and Valentino Rossi. Casey Stoner came up and it takes time to understand for some people that he is making the difference.”

Suppo said he was also relieved that the prospects of a single-make tyre rule appear to have significantly diminished in 2008, with a proposal effectively punishing Bridgestone and Ducati for winning their first world championship.

He added: “If you take away Casey it is a totally different story. Sometimes the gap between two Michelin riders is bigger than the gap between a Bridgestone and Michelin rider.

"It proves in this sport, like it or not, the man makes the difference. Casey was the big difference this year with his package, but this is why we are here, we are here to build up a winning team.

"We’d be punished by a single tyre rule and this is what is really strange to me. It is the first time that Bridgestone won the title but two Michelin guys are second and third, so it is unfair to speak about a domination of Bridgestone.”


Ducati will vote no for the single make tyre rule in both International Race Teams Association and Motorcycle Sport Manufacturers Association meetings due to take place in Malaysia this week.

That’s prior to the final decision being reached on Saturday night in Sepang following a meeting of the Grand Prix Commission.

“Of course we will vote no. It’s not too keep an advantage but we believe it is better t have competition.

"A single tyre rule is not going to take away this problem. Look at the gap between first and second in World Superbikes. There have been a lot of runaway victories in World Superbikes, “added Suppo.
