One of the most famous and best loved mechanics in the world of motorcycle racing, Giorgio Nepoti, was killed together with his wife on Friday 30th June, in a head on collision with another car that had strayed into the wrong lane. Nepoti, or ‘Giorgione’ as he was better known, was 70 years old this year. Nepoti set up team NCR with Rino Caracchi in 1969, and was considered one of the most experienced mechanics in the world of motorcycle racing. Nepoti was acclaimed as a leading expert in Ducati engines. His know-how was behind many race wins in Italy and elsewhere. He was Mike Hailwood’s mechanic at the 1978 TT when Hailwood and NCR won the TT with a Ducati 900 SS, and was also Doug Polen’s mechanic when Polen won the world SBK title in 1991 on a Ducati 888 NCR.
In recent years Nepoti worked on engine development alongside Franco Farné in the team headed by Stefano Caracchi. FG Sport extends its sincere condolences to Nepoti’s family and to Team SC.
