In pole position for the first leg of the Stu Reid 125cc Trophy was pre-race favourite and 1996 British GP wild-card Chris Palmer, who had dominated 125cc racing at Scarborough for the previous few seasons.
From a dead engine start, the first rider to push his machine into life was Ian Popplewell, but Palmer was ahead by the time they peeled into Mere Hairpin, with Lougher second almost colliding with Popplewell in the first corner rush. Palmer then set a blistering pace on his RS Honda pulling away from arch-rival Lougher’s JWS Aprilia, while Martin Pollard and Darran Lindsay battled for third place.
The race was red-flagged on the fifth lap after Garry Dickinson crashed out, fortunately escaping injury, which happened to be on the same lap that Palmer broke his own class lap record. Carlisle-based Palmer knocked more than half-a-second off his own previous best, set at July’s Cock o’ the North meeting, with a lap of 1m 56.95s.
As the race had gone beyond three-quarters distance the result was declared from the end of the fourth lap, with Palmer taking the victory more than 12 seconds ahead of Lougher at the finish. Third was Martin Pollard, just 0.5s ahead of Darran Lindsay, with local ace Dave Whitaker in fifth. TT-legend Joey Dunlop finished 14 th, struggling on return from a left hand injury which had threatened his place in the starting line-up.
