Asked if he thought Rossi would struggle on the Ducati next year, Rainey was emphatic: “No way. He’ll be there. If Rossi has the desire and he has that instinct that he’s had in the past, he’ll be there. He’ll be the same rider. He’s not going to forget how to do that. I mean, he’s in his prime. If anything he should be better now, no doubt. But the thing that’s different about Rossi, is he’s already got nine championships, he’s got all those races and he’s got all those wins in all those different classes. He’s grown up in the paddock. He knows only grand prix racing"
“So now it’s up to Rossi. He’s not going to lose speed because of his age, he’s not going to lose instinct because of his age. All that stuff is still there. He’s not going to have to think about it as much as say Lorenzo or Stoner. I think it’s up to Rossi if he wants it as badly as he did four years ago. If he still has that same desire he will be there and racing and competing against Lorenzo at that same level. It’s up to Rossi.
“I think this year he got injured, that played on him. I think he also had Lorenzo on the same bike, same team going after his first championship. Really was it a fair fight? I don’t think so. It was fair until Rossi made that mistake. And what caused that mistake? Probably a little bit of his teammate. So he’s definitely thinking about it a little bit different.”
Rainey believes Rossi has a “bit of a confidence problem that he’s having. Number one is Lorenzo and then I think the next bit is this injury he’s having. He’s not being able to ride through the injury to use his ability as he’s always done in the past. I think he has a teammate now that, when Rossi is 100% it takes Rossi all of that to compete with his teammate. That’s never happened to Rossi before. His teammates have basically been nobodies, guys he was not intimidated by. But Lorenzo has the speed of Rossi, making Rossi race in a way he’s never had to do in the past.”
