1. Pierobon manufactured RS frames for privateer teams
2. Verlicci were the prefered builder of all the Corse Factory frames
3. At times Pierobon were given the Factory frames for minor repairs. (Minor)
4. Comparable welding, Tig on a verlicci looks far more superior then Pierobon
5. A 748RS (Pierobon) Frame WILL fit all parts needed to build a 996RS, even the late model 996RS Factory air box, the deepest one produced by MS.
You will just have to ensure that you get the Corse Billet Rocker covers, as they are only 5mm thick, as the Magnesium ones or the normal road ones are 10mm thick. These covers actualy recess in the head, not protrude.
Using the billet inspection covers then poses another issue, the type of inlet manifolds that you then must use, and then the injection system, the dimesions of the fuel lines inside the airbox, different shaped coil mounts and the list goes on. Be aware that if you use the later model 2001 996RS Largest two piece air box, you will have to have the key mount cut out, to fit the air box and it's front section. The Verlicci frame just had a smaller cross brace there, rather than a key mount
6. The 748RS frame should have the same bracket set up as that of a road going 748/91/ 966/. To mount your ignition switch / Block. This was used to mount an aluminium bracket for the off / on switch. Unlike the 996RS where the on/off switch was mounted on the Carbon dash mount.
7. Genuine 748RS frames were not made by either Verlicci or Pierebon.
8. In 2002 the 748Rs frames were made from two different materials, there was a trial done during the 2002 supersport season, where very few of the 748RS frame (14 to be precise) were actually manufactured from
Chrome Molly. This was a far lighter frame.
9. A Pierebon or Velicci frame, if coming from the factory had a number on the head stem. Your Pieroben obviously will not, but the genuine 748RS frames had the frame number on the head stem, and also had numbers and Manufactures info and other stuff, stamped into the frame. This can be found on the rear of the cross bar wher the seat hinge is fastened.
10.The 996RS fram also has a thicker and stronger steering stop compared to the 748RS frame and the road going ones.
11.The 748RS frame also has the exact same design as do the road bikes where the swing arm pivot goes though the frame on the left hand side. On the inside of the frame there is a 3.7mm approx lip which makes it impossible for the swingarm to be removed, or installed without have to drop or tilt the engine. THIS IS A MAJOR PAIN!!!
You can either grind of this lip, UNTIDY and NOW MODIFIED... or you can easily get your swing arm pivot bush, the one that the pivot slides through machined down by the 3.7mm. You will then have to get a spacer made the exact same dimensions as the pivot bush, to use to fill the void of the recess that prevents you from removing the swingarm like the race bikes.
Personal opinion, If you can find a spare road swing arm bush, just get a machine shop to mill off a piece of the tube to the thickness required. You will now have the same dimensions, and material strength with very little mucking around.
12. The genuine 748RS frame also had the mounts for the fuse box.
