The struggling worldwide economy has hit the wallet of seven-time MotoGP World Champion Valentino Rossi, but "The Doctor" won't need to apply for public assistance any time soon.
Rossi dropped from 20th to 51st in Forbes magazine's annual rankings of the world's highest-paid athletes. Forbes reported Rossi has earned $22 million in the last 12 months, $12 million in salary and $10 million in endorsements. He is the only motorcycle racer on the list of 100 athletes.
The Doctor's wallet became thinner because he reportedly took a significant pay cut to return to more competitive machinery at Yamaha after two years in the lucrative wilderness with Ducati in 2011-12.
Formula One champion Fernando Alonso was the highest-paid motorsports competitor on the list, at 19th overall with $30 million in earnings from his deal with Ferrari and endorsements.
The earnings of Rossi and Alonso are puny compared to those of golfer and in our opinion not the most clandestine adultery participant we've ever seen, Tiger Woods, who returned to the top of the athletic earnings heap. Woods reportedly earned $78.1 million in salary and endorsements in the last 12 months.
