Engine & Fuel Systems
Dirty Carburetors: A very common problem, especially after the bike has been sitting for a long time, leading to no-start conditions, poor idle, and the engine running rich.
Fuel Starvation: The fuel petcock or its refurbishing kit can fail, causing the engine to cut out at high RPMs.
Carb Icing: Kawasaki parallel twins are prone to icing, which can cause the engine to run rich and cut out on one cylinder, particularly in cold, damp weather.
Ignition System
Faulty Ignition Coils: A failing ignition coil or poor wiring connections can lead to backfiring and misfires.
Wiring Issues: Loose or corroded wiring, especially near the CDI unit and on the right side of the bike, can cause intermittent electrical issues.
Rotor Magnets: On first-generation models, the magnets on the generator rotor can shatter, causing the charging system to fail.
Transmission & Gearbox
Fragile Gearbox: Pre-1994 models are known to have a fragile gearbox.
Disintegrating Ignition Bell Resin: The resin in the ignition bell can disintegrate over time, potentially clogging the oil strainer.
Other Common Issues
Cam Chain Tensioner:
The stock cam chain tensioner is a known weak point and often needs replacing.
Oil Leak: Some models may develop a leak from the core plugs or other components after being disassembled.
Clunky Gear Changes: Older bikes can sometimes exhibit a clunk when shifting into first gear, which can often be reduced once the oil warms up.
