    Season 2007 - Yamaha to debut new engine

    Yamaha will debut a totally-revised engine in time for Moto GP's autumn run-in in a desperate bid to help Valentino Rossi close in on Casey Stoner in the battle for the title.

    Stoner's Ducati team are well-known to have the best engine in the business, although the team refute the notion that it is the only factor that has taken him to a 21-point lead in the standings.

    But Yamaha have been lagging in that department and technical boffins in Japan are busily working on a new powerplant featuring pneumatic valves rather than the normal sprin-operated components.

    "They are working on [the engine] in Japan," team chief Davide Brivio told Italian Sports Daily La Gazzetta dello Sport. "It will arrive once it has been tested.

    Brivio added that the squad will have to wait at least two races for the new engines to be delivered to them, meaning that they will have them in place for the Czech Grand Prix at Brno at the very earliest.

    More likely is that they will be run for the first time in the one-day test immediately following the race and will then have their full debut two weeks later at Misano in Italy.

    *Yamaha and star rider Valentino Rossi closed to within 21 points of the Casey Stoner and Ducati with victory in the recent Dutch TT at Assen, but the Italian still has two main areas of technical weakness compared with his young Australian rival.

    Rossi's Michelin tyres haven't performed as well as Stoner's Bridgestones in the wet this season, while the 21-year-old's Ducati still holds the upper hand in terms of acceleration and top speed.

    While Michelin works on its rain rubber, Yamaha hope to improve the M1's engine output through the incorporation of pneumatic, rather than spring operated, valves.

    "They are working on [the engine] in Japan," Fiat Yamaha Team director Davide Brivio told La Gazzetta dello Sport. "It will arrive once it has been tested.

    "We are lucky that in Japan they only have a one week vacation… I don't know if the new engine will be raced at Brno, but we should certainly have it to test on the Monday."

    Pneumatic valve systems are already used by Suzuki and Kawasaki in MotoGP and offer advantages over traditional spring systems at ultra-high RPM. Ducati uses its own special desmodromic valve system, which manually opens and closes the valves.

    The Czech Republic Grand Prix, the first event after the MotoGP summer break, will take place on August 17-19. Before Brno, MotoGP heads for Germany next weekend and the USA the weekend after.

    * Elias aims for Brno return

    Elias, 24, broke his left leg during a crash in practice for the Dutch TT at Assen last week, putting him out of action for the moment, and his team boss Fausto Gresini has wasted little time in finding replacements.

    22-year-old Italian Fabrizio will take his place in the German Grand Prix at the Sachsenring while DuHamel (far right) will ride at the United States Grand Prix a week later.

    Fabrizio races for DFX Honda in the World Superbike Championship and is backed by Honda Italy. He was the man that rode in place of Elias in last year's British GP when Elias was also injured.

    DuHamel, by contrast, is a man at the opposite end of his career. The 39-year-old Canadian has not raced in Moto GP since a full season with Yamaha France in 1992, when he finished 12th in the championship.

    Since then he has raced in the AMA championships in the USA, winning the 1995 Superbike title and four crowns in Supersports.

    While his selection may surprise many, Gresini see his intimate knowledge of the Laguna Seca circuit which hosts the US race as a major plus as it is renowned as one of the most difficult tracks to find a set-up for.

    Despite initially being given a three-month recovery period, Elias aims to be back in just six weeks in time for the Czech GP at Brno. If he is unable to return by then it is likely that Fabrizio would again deputise.

    American GP - Indy in, Laguna out !!!!

    Moto GP will race at the famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway next year when the race switches from its current home at Laguna Seca.

    Joie Chitwood, the Indianapolis track's president, told the Indianapolis Star that the race will change venues as part of an expanded 18-race calendar.

    The news will be officially confirmed later this month with Chitwood also set to unveil plans to re-vamp the current road-course section of the oval circuit with the bike track set to run in the opposite direction to the current track.

    German GP - Rossi to quit in 2010

    Valentino Rossi has confirmed that he will quit Moto GP racing in three years time, possibly for a switch to four-wheeled motorsport.

    The 28-year-old Italian has been linked with a move to both Formula One and the World Rally Championship in the past 18 months, having tested for Ferrari and competed in a number of rally events.

    But the Yamaha rider has instead elected to resign his rivals on two-wheels to yet more punishment, for another few years at least, as he goes in search of a sixth world title.

    "I have a contract with Yamaha until 2008," said Rossi. "When that finishes then we'll see.

    "What I am sure about is that I will ride until I'm 31 or 32 at most. I will look for new stimuli in the next few seasons, but for now I am fully motivated."

    Rossi currently trails Australian Casey Stoner by 21 points in the race for this year's word crown as the Moto GP circus heads to the Sachsenring this weekend for round ten of the championship.

    A battling win at the Dutch TT last time out for 'The Doctor' helped him close the gap to the Ducati rider, but he knows he needs to pull out all the stops in order to beat Stoner again.

    "We know that Casey will be strong again, like he is everywhere this year. With him performing at such a high level at every race, 21 points is not a small amount so we have to be at the maximum," he added.

    "We've got work to do still; we're not perfect yet, especially in the wet, but we're going in the right way and we'll keep pushing."

    Rossi has previously won three times in Germany, in 2002, 2005 and 2006 and another victory would be his third in as many years at the Sachsenring.

    Stoner ready to rock the 'ring.

    Rossi reversed his wet qualifying woe to hunt down and pass the 21-year-old late in the Dutch TT, reducing the points difference between them to 21, but Stoner is still ahead five wins to three as MotoGP 2007 reached its midway point.

    "We start the second half of the season still leading the championship and very much looking forward to the next nine races," declared Ducati MotoGP project director Livio Suppo. "During this period there are several circuits that suit our machine package, so that is a positive for us. The Sachsenring is quite a strange circuit, quite tight in places and with no big straights, but we have always gone quite well there, so we go into this race feeling fairly confident of a good result."

    Having only failed to finish on the podium twice from the first nine rounds, Stoner is also confident of another strong weekend although, having never ridden his Bridgestone-shod Ducati at the twisty track before, he remains cautious.

    "Every race we are still learning about the set-up of the bike, especially when we go to different types of circuit. The Ducati and the Bridgestones have been working well at pretty much every circuit, so when we get to Germany we'll just concentrate and keep doing what we've been doing," he said. "I got my first-ever podium at the Sachsenring, the track is fun on a 125 but it's a little bit more difficult to negotiate some of those turns on a MotoGP bike.

    "You definitely need good side grip because through a lot of those long corners you need to keep the gas open as long as possible. You also need to get your head around those uphill and downhill corners - coming down the hill into those fast lefts gets a bit scary, you have to make sure your suspension doesn't bottom out, then you head back up the hill and then down again. As you come over the top at turn 12 the rear gets very light and wants to wriggle around, so you really need some traction over the top there," he revealed.

    The factory Ducati squad certainly won't be able to exploit top speed next weekend, but Stoner's team-mate Loris Capirossi is hopefully he'll be able to finally return to the podium after a run of disappointing races.

    "We go into this race after a couple of difficult weekends at Donington and Assen. But this is racing, sometimes things don't go your way and the only answer is to keep cool and keep working to make things better," he explained. "We have been making some improvements to the bike over the last few races but so far we haven't been able to turn these improvements into a good result."

    American GP - DuHamel in line for Gresini ride

    Miguel DuHamel has emerged as the surprise favourite to replace the injured Toni Elias at Gresini Honda at the United States Grand Prix later this month.

    The 39-year-old Canadian knows the Laguna Seca track intimately having raced there regularly in AMA Superbikes and as a wildcard in World Superbikes since 1993 and is seen as the ideal replacement for the Spaniard, who has a broken leg.

    DuHamel has not raced in Moto GP since he ran a full season in 1992 for Yamaha France, finishing 12th overall with a best race finish of fifth place in the Brazilian GP.

    Britain's James Toseland, who is tipped to join Gresini next year, had been linked to the seat.

    But the World Superbike Championship, which 2004 champion Toseland currently leads, visits Brno in the Czech Republic on the same weekend as the Laguna race and the Brit has insisted that his current campaign takes priority over any Moto GP action.

    2003 World Superbike champion Neil Hodgson had also been rumoured and had the approval of Dorna, who are keen to get a British rider back into the series following the withdrawal of Jeremy McWilliams' Ilmor team.

    But the former d'Antin Ducati rider has signed to race for the Corona Honda team in the AMA Superbike races that will support the Grand Prix.

    That means he would be unlikely to accept a clashing Moto GP ride at the same track and clears DuHamel's way to seal a deal.

    Under Moto GP rules Gresini have one round's grace in which to run a single bike, meaning it is highly likely only Marco Melandri will turn out for them in Germany next weekend.

    The future of the American rider has been the subject of much speculation but he has now decided where his future lies and an official announcement could be made at this weekend's German GP.

    Kawasaki have thus far remained quiet on Hopkins' switch, but Suzuki's MotoGP boss Paul Denning has confirmed it is a done deal.

    "We have been informed by John's management that he has signed for Kawasaki," Denning told MCN.

    "We have still got 50 per cent of the 2007 season to go and it's obviously a disappointment from Suzuki's point of view.

    "Suzuki had made John a strong and a solid offer and he has chosen to go in a different direction for whatever reasons those maybe. From our point of view that's something we respect and have to go along with.

    "But as I said we still have 50 per cent of the season to go and John Hopkins is still a Rizla Suzuki Grand Prix rider and we will be giving him absolutely everything as we always do to try and help him and get him into the top three in the championship."

    Hopkins has been one of the most consistent performers in Moto GP this season and currently lies fourth in the standings despite only have one podium finish.

    Briton Neil Hodgson rejected the overtures of Gresini Honda owner Fausto Gresini to replace Toni Elias alongside Marco Melandri at the German and American MotoGP races in order to focus upon his Superbike career.

    Former World Superbike champion Hodgson, now 33, is without a ride in 2007. He decided that his aim of regaining a place in either the American or World Superbike series is better served competing in a race allied to the former competition.

    "I really appreciate the offer, but my future is definitely on a superbike, not a GP bike," he said.

    Michel Fabrizio will take the berth at Sachsenring in Germany, while Miguel DuHamel will ride the Honda RC212V at the American Laguna Seca raceway. Hodgson will race on a Honda Fireblade at the same circuit.

    The rider's manager Roger Burnett revealed that that he did not agree with the decision.

    "I'm disappointed. It would have been great to see have seen Neil on a MotoGP bike. Riding in Europe is what attracts the European teams to you.

    "Neil's thought process is that his future is on a superbike and he is hoping that this AMA ride in Laguna Seca turns into something good for next season.

    "Personally I think it is the wrong route because riding the Gresini bike would have been a chance to woo World Superbike people.

    "It was a good opportunity in my opinion, but if Neil's focus is on Superbikes then that's obviously his prerogative."

    After his 2003 World Superbike triumph, Hodgson moved into MotoGP in 2004 with D'Antin Ducati, but his stay in the sport was difficult.
