Season 2008 - Three bikes for Kawasaki in 2008?

Kawasaki could expand to three bikes full-time next year, according to team manager Michael Bartholemy.

The Japanese manufacturer will run an extra bike for Roger Lee Hayden - younger brother of world champion Nicky Hayden - at next weekend's United States race at Laguna Seca.

And Bartholemy thinks that, dependant on how successful the trial is, a triple assault in 2008 could be viable.

"Originally we had no intention of running any wild card riders this year, but we were able to look again at the possibility after the Catalunya race and it quickly became apparent that there was an opportunity for us to run a third bike at Laguna Seca," said Bartholemy.

"Who knows? Maybe this will be the start of us using wildcard riders more in the future or, possibly, running a third bike full time in the championship next year."

Suzuki rider John Hopkins has already confirmed he will be part of Kawasaki's team next year. A three-pronged attack on the championship could see current riders Randy de Puniet and Anthony West retain their seats.

Stoner tops opening Sachsenring practice

Casey Stoner proved that his Ducati works as well on tight and twisty circuits as it does on flat-out blasts by topping the opening practice session for the German Grand Prix.

The 21-year-old Australian took his machine around the Sachsenring circuit in 1:23.058, over seven tenths of a second quicker than Carlos Checa's LCR Honda.

American duo John Hopkins and Colin Edwards were next up for Suzuki and Yamaha, making it two Bridgestone and two Michelin-shod runners in the top four and perhaps proving early on that tyres will not be the factor in Germany that they have been elsewhere.

Marco Melandri got off to a good start for a change and was fifth fastest for Gresini Honda while Randy de Puniet was next up for Kawasaki.

World Champion Nicky Hayden was seventh quickest despite a sizeable tumble on his Repsol Honda while Stoner's closest rival in the championship Valentino Rossi - last year's race winner - was eighth for Yamaha.

That put him only one spot and one tenth of a second ahead of the Dunlop-shod Tech-3 Yamaha of Sylvain Guintoli while Anthony West completed the top ten for Kawasaki.

Michel Fabrizio, who is replacing the injured Toni Elias at Gresini Honda was 17th quickest with local hero Alex Hofmann 15th for d'Antin Ducati despite riding with a broken bone in his hand courtesy of shutting it in a door at his home.

His d'Antin team-mate Alex Barros though suffered a nasty accident as he fell off at the fast right-hander where the track begins to swoop downhill.

Despite his bike landing on top of him the Brazilian walked away from the accident and appears to have escaped any major injuries.

German GP - Stoner quickest again in practice

Casey Stoner once more proved his prowess around the twisty Sachsenring circuit by going fastest in the second free practice session for the German Grand Prix.

The world championship leader first hit the front just eight minutes into the hour-long session on his Ducati and then gradually improved his time lap after lap to end up with an unbeaten 1:22.737.

That was more than enough to secure the 21-year-old Australian his place at the top of the pile for the day.

Try as the rest did, nobody could get within 0.346 seconds of Stoner, with Valentino Rossi, who trails him by 21 points in the world championship, the best of the chasing pack on his Yamaha.

Such was the closeness of the pack that one second covered everybody from Rossi in second right down to the Tech-3 Yamaha of Makoto Tamada in 14th and the final few minutes saw a predictably frantic scramble for positions.

First Carlos Checa - one of the stars of the morning - went third on his LCR Honda with a minute to run but was quickly shoved back before he'd even known about his lofty position as the Repsol Honda of Dani Pedrosa claimed third.

The sensational Sylvain Guintoli, who was running the unfashionable Dunlop tyres on his Tech-3 Yamaha, was fourth quickest, also getting ahead of Checa right at the end

Marco Melandri was sixth quickest for Gresini Honda with Alex Barros, who was showing no side-effects after his morning crash, next up on his d'Antin Ducati.

Colin Edwards was eighth on the second factory Yamaha with John Hopkins and Randy de Puniet - both of whom crashed at turn one in the first 20 minutes - rounding out the top ten for Suzuki and Kawasaki.

Ducati rider Loris Capirossi was another to go through the gravel at turn one while KR rider Kurtis Roberts had the biggest crash of the session, thumping down onto the ground at the penultimate corner.

The most unlucky man of the session though had to be Nicky Hayden. After his crash in the morning session the world champion was struggling for pace on his Repsol Honda.

Then, with less than a minute of the session remaining his engine let go in the biggest possible way, showering the start/finish straight with shrapnel and leaving a huge pool of oil underneath his machine once he brought it to a halt.

Hayden was only 17th fastest out of the 19 riders.
