Dear sir/madam
May I offer you my congratulations for the 50 year anniversary of Yamaha. With the present fax I would like to ask your help for a technical problem that has recently come up and seems that nobody knows how to resolve it, at least here in Europe, concerning a motorbike of yours, which I own.
The motorbike is a TRX850, it is my first motorbike and it was bought for two reasons. First because it’s a Yamaha since I am a Yamaha fan for many years and second because it’s a tool for somebody who wants to learn the science of motorcycling, simple to the construction, with an engine of high standards, but specially concerning road behavior.
The bike was bought on the 25th Feb 2005After a personal request, from the Yamaha of Germany (YMG) and transferred to me by a Greek importer who brought in Greece from the very beginning I discovered that my TRX was consuming oil and smoke was coming off the exhaust. The measurement of oil consumption showed 500+ ml for every 1000km.despite the fact that it was to be checked to see if there is a serious problem with the engine, in request for information about the TRX model consumption from the YMG, the answer was what is mentioned in n1 document (to notice that is not referred to the TRX/TDM models only but they present this specifications being one of all Yamaha motorbikes)
So I turned to Yamaha of Europe (YME).after the discussions I had via e-mail with Mr … (Service engineer-YMENV –PTW service & testing) the result was that there wasn’t enough information about my TRX’s oil consumption. So an oil consumption measurement was made based on the Yamaha’s standards. The measurement was made by the chief-technical engineer of Motodynamics, official and exclusive importer of Yamaha for Greece. The results are registered on the document n2.
After that the reply of YME was in accordance with YMG, meaning that there wasn’t anything else that they could do.
I would like to report that after my obstinate request to have the exact e-mail of YMC in order to inform you about my problem, Mr … called me on my cellular phone trying to convince me that the YMC would confirm the thing that YMG and YME were saying.(this can be verified by the cellular companies)after a long discussion we have agreed that the YME would ask the standards for the oil consumption of TRX from YMC.
Then I made the measurement at Motodynamics. I sent to the YME the results and the response was the last e-mail of … (even if he says: e-mail Sep 14,1:24PM <…the oil consumption of 1 liter per 1000 kilometer is a general warning where you are sure there is something wrong…> for 950ml per 1019 aren’t we?)
As an mechanical engineer myself (National Technical University of Athens-Department of Mechanical Engineering) thus having many discussions with my colleagues (professors and not) there is nobody to agree that an engine consuming 1lt for 1000km is normal. After coming in contact with other Yamaha owners and with TDM/TRX clubs, Yamaha clubs, motorcyclists forums almost everybody believes that my TRX’s oil consumption is excessive and this shows that the internal parts of the engine need to be checked. Of course some people told me that, if the YMG’s document is valid, then this is a way of legal insurance for the YMC in case some pieces are defectives from the construction line(whereas I doubt that a defective piece could come in the market, even to be constructed, as I know Yamaha’s standards methods of construction from the international and local press which I read all these years. For example I would like to remind you that the n1 in sales Greek magazine < …>has come to the Yamaha factories and dedicated a special edition on Yamaha about the time TRX was constructed.
In fact many people didn’t believe me when I said that I had in my possession such a document referring these standards for oil consumption of a Japanese constructor’s motorbike and specially Yamaha’s motorbike. (Nobody can understand, for example, that the new R6 maintains the excessive performance that the Yamaha declares and at the same time consuming (burning or/and losing) 1lt of oil for 1000km)
That’s why I would like to ask you, in order to realize what kind of engineer I am and what subject I was studying all these years, three very simple but totally technical questions:
1) With 950ml for the 1019 him what will I have to except from my TRX? is everything normal and the engine works between the limits that the YMC has set or must the internal parts of the engine be checked because there is a problem and it might become more serious every time I ride my TRX
2) Is the YMG’s document valide. Are these the limits, set from the YMC for the motorbikes that it constructs or not? If not which are they? (I am asking this not for myself but for my friends, colleagues even people who works for the Greek official importer who was astonished by the claims of YMG)
3)Are there any limits (In This World!?!?)for the oil consumption limit of a TRX? a) YMG:< an oil consumption of 1 liter per 1000km is to be considered normal for the Yamahas>
b)YME:<…revision is recommendable if the engine consumes more oil than 1 liter per 1000km…> Sep 8 ,11:33 am. (so with 950ml per 1019 km I am o.k.. How lucky I am!!!!!)
What action shall both sides take so that the TRX will run not in bad condition but according to the standards that YAMAHA, YOU have set?
P.S:1) I would like to ask your understanding in case I have sent this fax to the wrong department of YMC. If this happens please send me the right address (fax, e-mail) which I must refer to. In any case, I would like to ask you to keep me informed about the “fortune” of this fax.
2) Furthermore the doubts and the concerns about the proper use and function of TRX are shared by the Greek importer who brought TRX in Greece from YMG, who is him self concerned about the right service of his clients and friends(like me)as well as the satisfaction of them towards him and his company. For further information these are his i.o.details (…) in order to confirm what I am saying.
Yours faithfully
