American GP - Hopper pleased to be home

Rizla Suzuki's John Hopkins has spoken of his excitement at returning to the state of his birth for the eleventh round of the MotoGP Championship at Laguna Seca.

"Hopper" was born in Ramona, California to English parents, and is hoping the presence of friends and family in the stands will help him record his maiden MotoGP triumph.

"I can't wait to get to Laguna. It is great to be coming home to race," he said.

"I love racing there and it always feels special to me. All my family and friends are there and the American fans get to see a MotoGP for the only time this year in their country. It is a great track to race on and hopefully we can give a good showing on the Rizla Suzuki and try and stand on top of the box.

Meanwhile, Hopkins' team-mate Chris Vermeulen is hoping for better fortunes than he experienced in the race last year, where low fuel levels saw him drop back to fifth position after having led for the majority of the race.

I thought I could have had my first MotoGP podium at Laguna last year, the bike and the tyres worked really well there, but we had a small problem that stopped that happening, said Vermeulen, I really enjoy this track and I had a lot of success in World Superbike and I'm really looking forward to racing there and I'm sure we can be fighting at the front.

Hayden: No home advantage

Nicky Hayden does not think he will have any home advantage this weekend as he gears up for the United States Grand Prix at Laguna Seca.

World champion Hayden, 25, has won for the past two years at the Californian circuit on his Repsol Honda, making the most of track knowledge compared to his rivals.

But, after a terrible start to the season that sees him winless and 123 points off championship leader Casey Stoner, the "Kentucky Kid" is not so optimistic this time.

"I would not say that I'm the favourite this year. I haven't won a race," said Hayden.

"Racing on home soil sure helped me out in the first year because nobody else knew the track like I did.

"But now everybody else knows it and the advantage I had is not so important. I know there will be a lot of fans supporting me and I am dying to see if I can win again."

Hayden's recent form though, has given cause for optimism in the Honda camp. Podium finishes in the last two races have seen him climb from 12th to ninth in the world championship.

Coupled with Dani Pedrosa's dominant win at the Sachsenring, a track as tight and twisty as Laguna, both riders could be on course to challenge for a win.

For the first time since his AMA Superbike days in 2002, the World Champion will have his brother Roger Lee competing against him on-track as the younger Hayden has been signed by Kawasaki for a wildcard outing.

"I can't wait for it," he added. "I think it's gonna be fun. There will be other riders from the AMA too so it will be great for the fans too.

"I haven't given Roger Lee any advice really, but I'm sure once we're there and things start we may make some comments to each other about something."

Stoner stamps early authority at Laguna

But the Ducati Marlboro star was kept on his toes, in both sessions, by Marco Melandri - the Honda Gresini rider has been rejuvenated by new parts received at last weekend's German Grand Prix and lapped 0.187secs behind Stoner this morning, then closed to 0.180secs despite Casey raising his game to lap record pace this afternoon.

Third fastest on Friday was home hero John Hopkins. Hopper was fourth this morning, behind countryman Colin Edwards, but put Rizla Suzuki within 0.455secs of Stoner on his 11th of 33 afternoon laps. Edwards, riding in a special Texas Tornado livery on his Fiat Yamaha, was bumped to fourth by 0.083secs - making him the top Michelin rider by just 0.013secs from Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa with Valentino Rossi a mere 0.002secs further back for a Friday sixth.

2006 pole sitter Chris Vermeulen placed the second GSV-R seventh, while reigning world champion and defending Laguna Seca winner Nicky Hayden was a frustrated eighth, 0.771secs from Stoner, as he battled to set-up his RC212V for the twisty circuit.

Stoner's team-mate Loris Capirossi, rumoured to be leaving Ducati for either Suzuki or Kawasaki and being replaced by Melandri, was ninth quickest while Dunlop Tech 3 Yamaha's Makoto Tamada was an encouraging tenth.

A late burst raised Carlos Checa to eleventh while Randy de Puniet managed twelfth after a high-speed turn one fall early in the hour. The Frenchman was a fraction quicker than Kawasaki team-mate Anthony West, while fellow Laguna rookie Sylvain Guintoli partially redeemed his morning mistake by claiming 14th in front of ZX-RR wild-card Roger Lee Hayden. The younger Hayden ran as high as sixth early in the hour and could spring a surprise this weekend.

Alex Barros was clearly suffering from his Sachsenring hand injury and could lap no higher than 16th, while team-mate Alex Hofmann won't be seen for the remainder of the weekend. The German was hit by Guintoli at the top of the famous Corkscrew corner this morning, leaving him with a fractured metacarpal in his left hand. Hofmann was already riding with a broken bone in his right hand after it was shut in a car boot two weeks ago.

With 'The Hoff' sidelined, former 125 and 250GP rider and 2007 AMA rookie Chaz Davies has been handed a shock MotoGP debut replacing the #66. Davies is present at Laguna Seca for the AMA Supersport event and will now ride Hofmann's Desmosedici GP7 for the remainder of the weekend.

The 20-year-old Briton was unsurprisingly slowest of the 20 riders this afternoon as he began the process of learning both the machine and circuit, but will be encouraged to have lapped within 3.5secs of good friend Stoner and within one second of fellow MotoGP rookie - but Laguna veteran - Miguel Duhamel, who will surely be disappointed to have lapped slower in the afternoon than the morning.

On a more positive note, Kurtis Roberts took the new KR chassis to 17th place, 1.669secs behind Stoner.
