Congratulations to Greece CRESPO MUST STAY! - 763rd post - 4 Jul 2004 22:03
They played great football and showed discipline and they stuck to their game plan throughout the Tournament and they deserved it. [reply] [Complain about this post]

Quite - and when you beat France, the Czech Republic then Portugal, without conceding a goal through the entire knockout stage, there is no arguement - quite simply they were the best team in the tournament. [reply] [Complain about this post]

no stars just hardwork and teamwork and loads of sweat i wonder who might benefit from that approach?
not our top premiership stars surely? [reply] [Complain about this post]
re: Congratulations to Greece arfur mind - 164th post - 4 Jul 2004 22:26
Wrong, they were the best DEFENSIVE team in the tournament. I just hope to god that other nations don't decide to copy them otherwise they will bore the fans to death!! [reply] [Complain about this post]
re: Congratulations to Greece Jon Day - 43rd post - 4 Jul 2004 22:45
I agree, I don't think football was the winner tonight - but you have to respect the Greeks and they probably could not have played any other way to win this tournament. There tatics are not a million miles away from the way England play, except they employed them better. [reply] [Complain about this post]
re: Congratulations to Greece Richard Singleton - 1st post - 5 Jul 2004 09:22
I have to say that all this talk about boring games etc is out of order, people can moan about defensive football and all that rubbish but the plain and simple fact is that Greece won all the games that counted and that's that. A win is a win in any football fan's book. The fact that Greece took on (and beat) the previous holders, host nation and undoubtebly 'the' form team of the tournament, the Czech Republic should silence any critics. That they did it without any big names or massive sponsorship is a refreshing wake up call to many of our overpaid, limelight seeking players. Teamwork was the winner and this should be emphasised at every level from the Champions league to the Sunday league. [reply] [Complain about this post]
re: Congratulations to Greece lion rampant - 9th post - 5 Jul 2004 09:25
england 1966- bored everyone to death with defensive set up
many italian and german teams have won cups with best defense
this whole debate about whether they 'deserved it' is crazy - the team that wins a tournament as important and long as this always deserves it - how could it be anything else? through from a group with spain, portugal and russia? beat the mighty france? then beat winners from the holland/ germany/ czech group of death? then didn't freeze on the final despite the magnitude ? fan bloomin tastic i thought they were - 4 or 5 players in the team of the tournament - what more do you want

Oh yeah? Were you bored by our goals to France, the Czech Rep. and Portugal? I am sick and tired of all these 'sour grapes' arguments, that Greece played boring football, negative football, defensive football, etc. Other teams, that allegedly did not have these awful deficiencies, why didn't they win the cup??? [reply] [Complain about this post]
re: Congratulations to Greece Bishop Blaize - 1997th post - 5 Jul 2004 10:26
thats not true - note:
They scored in every game
They went head-to-head with France - outscored them.
They went head-to-head with Czechs - outscored them.
They went head-to-head with Portugal - outscored them.
These are probably the three best attacking teams in the tourney - and they outscored them all.
The fact that their philosphy is based on the (correct) assertion that you only need score one more than the opponents to win, should not be held against them - anyway, last night quite frankly the most threatening moves all came from Greece. [reply] [Complain about this post]

I don't think anyone English can possibly criticise the Greeks. I think their 'crime' of producing surprise overachievement is far easier to stomach than the England team's consistent underachievement!
Well done Greece. Now stop celebrating and get back to building that Olympic Stadium.... [reply] [Complain about this post]
re: Congratulations to Greece Gooner Phil - 598th post - 5 Jul 2004 09:32
I think the Greeks were great, and thoroughly deserved it.
I'm rather embarrassed by the sour grapes above "I don't think football won" and other such nonsense.
Defensive play is as much a part of football as attacking is. You can play either way, or find a balance in the middle.
Newcastle, Man City and a few other teams have played wild attacking football (usually under Keegan) but couldn't defend and didn't win anything.
Were Greece any different to the Arsenal sides under George Graham?
Compared to the Portugese - whose diving was a tad embarrassing at times, the Greeks were a model of fair play, too.
Credit where credit's due. The Greeks played really well, cancelled out Portugals attacking flair (Figo, Ronaldo, Maniche and all)which was more than we or Spain could do, and deserved the win. [reply] [Complain about this post]
re: Congratulations to Greece Ed Burt - 1st post - 5 Jul 2004 09:41
Did they deserve to win? Of course they deserve it! They beat Portugal twice in the same tournament in their country.
Well done to them. [reply] [Complain about this post]
re: Congratulations to Greece Dr Zeus - 1st post - 5 Jul 2004 10:15
Sour grapes too true!! I'm English but I live in Greece - Thank Goodness! Chances of me ever seeing England get a cup if they carry on as they are are zilch. We couldn't win back in '96 at home, it ain't gonna happen any time soon with the overpaid overrated players we have. The Greeks got there by dint of very hardwork and commitment to the cause. The way they played is a great example of fair and balanced football. Too defensive ?? They defended, but I thought that was part of the game, I must have missed something, the goals show they attack too. And let's not get carried away by ball possession stats and all - doesn't matter how long you have the ball it's what you do with it when you have got it! So they may not be as technical as other teams, they may not play like Brazi, boring ....? I don't think so, you must have been watching another match mate. I sat through some of the most boring international games ever especially in the 80's where if Italy/Germany had put in a goal in the 58th minute most likely we would all have been asleep by the 60th!! Or have we all forgotten that. The Greek team showed it's about soild hard work, talent and football first, not superstar paypackets, rep and images. They deserved what they got (let me just add that that was without using some of the other great players Greece has too!). Can't wait for the World Cup!! [reply] [Complain about this post]
