Shakey celebrates the big 50 at Oulton Park
297347
Defending champion Shane 'Shakey' Byrne celebrated his impressive 50th MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship victory in the second race of the weekend at Oulton Park as the Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki held off Josh Brookes in a dramatic 18 lap thriller.
Alex Lowes had been the rider to head the pack on the opening lap for Samsung Honda with race one winner James Ellison and Brookes tucked in behind. Byrne from the start looked ready to make a move on his rival and on the second lap a move down the inside paid off at Lodge as the Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki rider hit the front. A fired up Lowes was straight back on the attack and made a pass at Old Hall a lap later, the pair then swapped positions four times before Lowes held the advantage into lap four.
The Samsung Honda rider was holding off the attacking Byrne until lap six when a repeat move at Lodge saw the defending champion again take the lead. Lowes then came under fire from Ellison as the Milwaukee Yamaha saw a gap at Old Hall and made a move on lap seven to move to second. Brookes was in the hunt too and the Tyco Suzuki rider had made improvements which paid off as he moved to third on the twelfth lap at Lodge.
Brookes was then lining up Ellison for a pass as the leading pack had only a matter of inches between them; the Australian made a move at Shell Oils corner to move second and then had Byrne in his sights. Ellison was then coming under pressure from Lowes and Kiyonari on the Samsung Hondas, but as Lowes made a move at Island the Milwaukee Yamaha rider then ran wide across the grass and crashed out at high-speed unhurt.
Byrne still had the advantage at the front from a hassling Brookes and the Samsung Honda pairing of Lowes and Kiyonari and as the fight for the victory came down to the last lap the Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki rider had the edge to celebrate his 50th career victory in the championship. However it was last lap drama for Lowes as he lost the front end of his Samsung Honda at Lodge for the final time, crashing out of a podium finish as Brookes and Lowes completed the podium.
Tommy Bridewell scored Halsall Racing Kawasaki's best result of the season with a strong fourth place as he bridged a gap to Jon Kirkham on the leading Buildbase BMW after he had an early race battle with PJ Jacobsen on the second Tyco Suzuki. The New Yorker eventually ended the race sixth but behind there was an intense battle for seventh which was won by Dan Linfoot on the Lloyds British GBmoto Honda. He held off Keith Farmer and James Westmoreland in the closing stages and Howie Mainwaring scored an impressive top ten finish for the Tsingtao WK Bikes team.

ASSEN:welcome::priest:
Samsung Honda’s Alex Lowes clocked the quickest time of 1’38.702 in the first MCE British Superbike free practice session at the Assen circuit. The Lincolnshire rider set his fastest time on lap seven but a few seconds later he fell unhurt at Ossebroeken.
No other rider was able to outpace Lowes - even fast laps from Tyco Suzuki’s PJ Jacobsen and Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki’s Shane Byrne. Rain overnight meant that the Assen circuit was damp, but dried up throughout the 45 minute free practice outing. The diminutive American looked as if he could take advantage of a crashing Lowes after he succumbed to the gravel with five minutes left of the session, but the New Yorker could not lap inside the 1’38 second barrier and ended the morning with a 1’39.202.
Reigning champ Byrne was only four one-hundredths of second behind the Suzuki lad and ended the session third quickest, in front of Milwaukee Yamaha’s James Ellison. Tyco Suzuki’s Josh Brookes was as high as second on the timesheets with less than twenty minutes remaining, but seemed to lose some of the pace during the dying seconds of the session and finished rounding off the top five with a 1’39.523.
Padgett’s Honda man Jakub Smrz crashed at Haarbocht with less than one minute left, he was not injured and still managed to hold onto a time inside the top ten - sixth with a 1’39.551 lap. Buildbase BMW team-mates James Westmoreland and Jon Kirkham were setting consistently similar times, but it was the shorter of the two who just had the edge this morning, finishing in seventh and eighth respectively.
British Superbike returnee Noriyuki Haga made his first appearance out on track today. He has never raced a Kawasaki before until he tested the ZX-10R at Snetterton earlier this week. He is Shane Byrne’s team-mate for the remaining rounds, as crocked Keith Farmer is still recovering from injuries sustained at Donington Park. The Samurai of Slide progressed throughout the session and was as high as fifth on the timing screens, but slipped back to ninth with a 1’40.106.
Milwaukee Yamaha newbie rider Tommy Bridewell, who jumped ship from his former team Halsall Racing, hit the gravel with eight minutes remaining of the session. He crashed st Stekkenwal while seventh quickest but even though he was declared OK at the track side he was taken to the medical centre, as he had skin taken off his little finger that he injured earlier in the season. The Devizes swearbox partners Ellison as a replacement for Aussie rider Josh Waters.
Samsung Honda’s Ryuichi Kiyonari was second quickest for the first half of the free practice session but fell right down the time-sheets and found himself outside the top ten in eleventh with a 1’40.677, five tenths of a second behind Bridewell.
The opening free practice session was red flagged with eighteen minutes to go, after Tsingtao WKbikes Performance rider Howie Mainwaring Smart crashed unhurt at De Bult. The lappery was halted for a short time as the marshals investigated for surface contamination. But just as the red flag appeared it was Lowes who was leading the way with his best lap of 1’39.377, with Brookes and Bridewell rounding off the top three quickest times.
It was also the return of Doodson Motorsport’s Robbin Harms. The Danish rider has been out since breaking his wrist in a crash at Snetterton, and even though he is still not fully fit he was able to get in some track time

Datatag Extreme Qualifying: The reactions from Silverstone
300693
The MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship produced another dramatic day at Silverstone as Alex Lowes claimed another pole position as his Title Fighter rival Shane 'Shakey' Byrne valiantly fought back to start alongside him on the front row.
Lowes leads the pack
Lowes lapped under the lap record to claim his seventh pole position of the season for Samsung Honda, with the second placed Title Fighter just a point adrift of Byrne ahead of tomorrow's races. Lowes admits he had suffered some minor issues, but the team overcame that to head off their rivals.
Lowes said: "It would have been nice if we could have gone that little bit quicker but it is nice to be on pole. This morning we had a few problems and with the rain yesterday I went into a bit of panic mode as I thought we were running out of time but the Samsung Honda was working well in qualifying. It would obviously be nice for Shakey to be fully fit but I am pretty sure he will come out fighting tomorrow and he will be there in the races. I think the races are going to be close, hopefully just not as close as Assen!
Byrne's heroic second place despite huge free practice high-side
Byrne gritted his teeth and fought through the pain barrier to secure second on the grid for tomorrow's opening race after the Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki rider bounced back from a huge high-side in this morning free practice session. The defending champion had spent most of the day with the MCE BSB medical team and pysios before setting an impressive pace to line up alongside Lowes tomorrow.
Byrne said: "A front row was a good result for us as I certainly don't feel brand new! I need to thank the medical team here who have looked after me today as since the crash this morning life has gone into fast forward and after getting into the medical centre I said I needed to be out for qualifying and they said that's 20 minutes time and I was like, what?! The team also did a great job as my Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki as by all accounts the bike needed a new chassis, so all credit to them as they worked hard. I didn't expect the front row but I will definitely take it so I am really happy. I am definitely getting on a bit now so more physio in the med centre this evening and then I should be in the best shape I possibly can for the races."
Jacobsen scores first front row start
American PJ Jacobsen celebrated his first front row qualifying performance for Tyco Suzuki at Silverstone as he nudged his team-mate Josh Brookes back onto the second row.
Jacobsen said: "It was good coming off the weekend at Assen and these last tracks suit me and are ones that I know better. My confidence is pretty up there at the moment and I love riding the bike around fast tracks like this, but I made some mistakes on my fast lap, so tomorrow we are going to look for some more grip in morning warm up and make the last few changes ready for the race. I am happy with the front row so we are up for the races tomorrow."
Brookes still fighting chatter at Silverstone
Title Fighter Josh Brookes starts on the second row for tomorrow's opening race, but the Australian is hoping that some final changes put them in a position to challenge for the podium tomorrow.
Brookes said: "Unfortunately we were suffering with a little bit of chatter today, but we're not far away as fourth is close enough to the front. If we can cure that or find a way of working around it, then we'll be good tomorrow as the GSX-R1000 is a strong enough package around Silverstone."
Ellison determined to make amends
James Ellison will start from the sixth row of the grid following a crash on his first flying lap in qualifying but the Milwaukee Yamaha is determined to fight his way back up the order tomorrow.
Ellison said: "I am gutted for the Milwaukee Yamaha team as I just lost the rear on my first lap. I felt I had the heat in my tyre and I just lost the rear; usually it just drifts for a while and then grips but it just carried on sliding and that was it. I obviously didn't get enough heat in it but it has made me even more determined for the races tomorrow. It is a long lap here and a wide track and we know we can do the race pace times to win so we just need to try and get a good start to get away with the pack."

Lowes wins after incredible last lap battle with Byrne
Alex Lowes and Shane 'Shakey' Byrne locked horns again in the penultimate round of the MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship Showdown at Silverstone as the Samsung Honda rider narrowly emerged victorious in the opening race of the day, with the pair dicing all the way to the chequered flag.
Byrne had taken the lead on the opening lap as he continued to battle through the pain of his huge high-side yesterday, snatching the advantage from Lowes and Josh Brookes, but the Samsung Honda rider then moved ahead and although Byrne fought back instantly he couldn't get ahead.
Brookes then attacked Byrne, moving up to second but within three corners Byrne was back ahead and gunning for the lead. He attempted to pass Lowes into Stow on the third lap, but his main Title Fighter rival wasn't giving an inch and he held the lead. The leading trio were locked in formation but there was heartbreak for Brookes and the Tyco Suzuki team when he was forced to retire on the fifth lap with a technical issue that saw him again fail to score points.
Brookes' retirement promoted his team-mate PJ Jacobsen to third and he in turn was coming under pressure from the leading Milwaukee Yamaha of Tommy Bridewell. The American had the advantage until the closing stages but it wasn't until the final lap that Bridewell managed to push ahead and score his second podium finish for Milwaukee Yamaha ahead of Jacobsen.
At the front of the pack Lowes and Byrne were again inseparable and it came down to the final lap as Byrne hit the front at Maggotts with a decisive move down the inside. Lowes however was soon on the attack and after looking for the entire lap he reclaimed the position at Brooklands and despite Byrne trying to regain the lead at Luffield it came down to the drag to the line. The pair exited Luffield side-by-side and Lowes narrowly claimed a thrilling race win from Byrne to move back ahead by four points in the overall standings.
The second Milwaukee Yamaha of James Ellison claimed fifth after he had carved his way up the order in impressive style following his sixth row start as he edged out Jon Kirkham on the Buildbase BMW and Matteo Baiocco on the Rapido Sport Racing Ducati who celebrated his best finish. Barry Burrell was able to claim tenth after he edged out Josh Waters in his first race with Halsall Racing Kawasaki.

The final Showdown: The statistics301207
301206
The 2013 MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship will be decided at Brands Hatch next week and ahead of the triple-header title decider here are some statistics ahead of the season finale.
The one point margin between Shane 'Shakey' Byrne and Alex Lowes ahead of Brands Hatch is the closest gap in the standings since the Showdown was introduced. The previous gaps have been nine points between Byrne and Josh Brookes in 2012, eight points between John Hopkins and Tommy Hill in 2011 and eleven points between Hill and Brookes in 2010.
In the past three Showdowns this is the second time that a Kawasaki team has been leading the standings ahead of the final round - Byrne and Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki topped the standings after the penultimate round last year. In 2010 and 2011 it was Suzuki with Hill and Hopkins respectively.
Five manufacturers have been part of the Showdown six for the second consecutive season (Kawasaki, Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki and BMW) which is the same as in 2012. In 2010 it was between three (Honda, Suzuki, Ducati) and the same in 2011 (Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda).
In the past three Showdowns only once has the rider leading the standings into the final round won the title - Byrne last season. In 2010 Kiyonari came from third to lift the title and in 2011 Hill won from second.
The MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship has been won by three different manufactures in as many seasons - Honda last won the title in 2010, Yamaha in 2011 and Kawasaki last season in 2012.
The most race wins in a Showdown to date was Byrne last season with four ahead of Kiyonari in 2010 when he won three.
Byrne is the only rider to have featured as a Title Fighter and have claimed a podium finish in each of the Showdown races when he did so last year.
Out of the six 2013 Title Fighters four have scored Showdown wins in the past - Byrne, Lowes, Brookes and Kiyonari whilst Ellison has finished on the podium.
Of the current Title Fighters four have previously lined up in the top six - Byrne, Lowes, Brookes and Kiyonari. Ellison narrowly missed out in 2010 when he broke he femur at Thruxton but recovered to claim the Riders Cup title whilst James Westmoreland claimed the same title last season.
The final title-deciding round of the MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship takes place at Brands Hatch on 18/19/20 October with a triple-header round. For more information and to click here.

Shakey sets sights on record-breaking fourth title301578
301579
Shane 'Shakey' Byrne has his sights set on celebrating a record-breaking fourth MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship title at his home circuit of Brands Hatch this weekend but the Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki rider knows that it won't be easy against his 2013 nemesis Alex Lowes.
Byrne and Lowes are separated by just a single point ahead of this weekend after an epic clash last time out at Silverstone, when the pair shared the wins as Shakey overcome the pain of a huge free practice crash which left him on crutches. Byrne admits that he refused to give up on the title fight at Silverstone despite the pain and is now ready to take on Lowes in the final three races of the 2013 season.
Byrne said: "I am feeling a lot better now than I did at the last round and the few days after Silverstone. Since then I have had more physio sessions and been back in training so I am in the best possible position I can be in ready for Brands Hatch. I think the final round will be similar to the rest of the Showdown as it has been so close between myself and Alex but hopefully I get the balance in my direction at Brands Hatch! We have had some great battles and with only one point between us we both know that no matter what we need to beat each other. The reality is, that no matter who else is battling with us, I need to beat him and he needs to beat me and it really is that simple.
"I love Brands Hatch; not just because it is my local circuit - it could be anywhere and I would still love it because of the characteristics. I have had such incredible support there in the past and the track has been really good to me but it has also been cruel at times too. We have all ridden at Brands Hatch and know it equally, but hopefully it can be kind to me again this weekend. To be honest no words can describe what winning the title again would mean to me because it is worth far more than I can say. It's so important and the only reason why I am here."
The final title-deciding round of the MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship takes place at Brands Hatch on 18/19/20 October with a triple-header round. For more information and to book advance tickets click here.

Tyco Suzuki's Josh Brookes claimed his first MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship victory since Oulton Park with a commanding performance in the opening race of the triple-header Brands Hatch decider although Alex Lowes closed his advantage in the tense final laps.
Brookes had stormed into the lead with a move at Druids on the opening lap as he passed Shane 'Shakey' Byrne who had initially hit the front of the pack. Lowes was running fifth on the opening lap and he soon started to carve his way up the order as he bid to close on his title rivals. Brookes held the advantage from Byrne, Josh Waters and Lee Costello, but Lowes was up to third by the fourth lap as he made a move on both of the Halsall Racing Kawasakis who were charging in the damp conditions.
Brookes set a commanding pace over the opening laps to edge out a four second lead over Byrne and Lowes at the halfway point of the race as the track continued to dry. Lowes had closed in on his Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki rival and on lap 14 the pair crossed the start line side-by-side and Lowes bid to make a move into Paddock Hill Bend. The Samsung Honda rider finally made a move stick at Surtees and dramatically upped his pace over the closing laps in a bid to reel in Brookes. The tense final laps of the Grand Prix circuit saw Lowes pushing hard to catch the Tyco Suzuki ahead of him and the gap closed to just 0.968 seconds at the chequered flag. Byrne held third as he now trails Lowes by three points ahead of tomorrow's two races.
Brookes said: "I felt better at the start of the race when it was wetter, I felt comfortable and found a rhythm and could ride fast. As soon as it started to dry I was thinking of sticking to the dry lines and try and make the best of that without overheating the tyre. Then I went for wet patches and my gap seemed to grow so I felt comfortable. Then with two laps to go I saw Alex was behind me and then I saw from my board that the gap had come down to a second on the final lap, where it had been three so I quickly had to figure out how quick I could go so that he wouldn't be in a position to overtake me. I am proud of the Tyco Suzuki team today and hopefully we can have another good day tomorrow."
Waters held a lonely fourth place as he scored his best result of the season for the Halsall Racing Kawasaki team as PJ Jacobsen rounded out the top five. Tommy Bridewell put in another fighting performance to finish sixth as he passed Chris Walker on the Quattro Plant Bournemouth Kawasaki and James Westmoreland on the leading Buildbase BMW. Lee Costello claimed his first top ten finish in MCE BSB with ninth place for the Halsall Racing Kawasaki team and Michael Rutter completed the top ten. There was more disappointment for James Ellison as he was forced to retire from the race with a visor issue.

BSB CHAMPION 2013
301920
“It is incredible and it was always going to be difficult this weekend and then with the weather playing a big part it is really hard to enjoy races like that and it is easy to make a mistake. I passed Shakey at the end and pushed as hard as I could. I owe a lot to Shakey as he has made me the rider that I am, ten years ago I watched him do the double in the World Superbikes as a wild card and I have learnt off him and he has made me a better rider," said Lowes, at the circuit.
“The middle part of the year was good for me, and I kept up the good form. But Josh has been incredible this weekend and has not made a mistake, and I have enjoyed racing with everyone. My brother Sam would have given me a lot of stick if I didn’t win the championship but I managed to get out on top, and now he can't give me too much.”

Hopkins linked with Tyco Suzuki British Superbike seat BSN
Former MCE British Superbike star John Hopkins has been strongly linked to a ride in the Tyco Suzuki camp next season and comments by team manager Philip Neil at Brands Hatch Sunday did nothing to dispel them.
Rumours that both Josh Brookes and PJ Jacobsen riders would leave the team at the end of the year were rife and Jacobsen is testing a Mahi Kawasaki World Supersport bike at Jerez today. (Click here)
"Next year is still very much up in the air, it is very possible that we will have a new line up for the team next year, we are just not 100 percent sure yet,” said Neill, speaking to bikesportnews.com.
“The riders have had talks with other teams and we have had some talks with other riders and we have got some exciting ideas about what we like to do. We will get together over the next couple of days and come up with the right conclusions.”
American Hopkins is said to be keen to get back into competition after taking a year out to get his myriad injuries sorted out. He comes with Monster Energy backing and would be ripe for title sponsors Tyco Securities, who are based in New Jersey.

American Rispoli To Chase 2014 British Supersport Championship With Keith Flint's Team Traction Control

FIRESTARTER FLINT STARTS SUPERSPORT TEAM WITH AMERICAN PRODIGY RISPOLI
The Prodigy’s Keith Flint is set for a new gig in 2014 as he debuts his Team Traction Control in the Motorpoint British Supersport Championship with American young gun James Rispoli.
Flint, who has sold over 20 million albums worldwide, has a huge passion for racing, competing himself at club level. Flint’s Team Traction Control now progress to the Supersport Championship after securing two Endurance Championship titles before debuting in the National Superstock 1000 class this season with Steve Mercer and at the final round with Rispoli.
Rispoli made his British debut wildcarding in 2012 and is now relishing the opportunity to line up on the grid in the Monster Energy backed team. The 22 year-old New Yorker has already tasted success in the United States of America in the AMA Pro Supersport National Championships, celebrating four consecutive AMA Pro Supersport Championships in two seasons. In his earlier career before making the transition to circuit racing he was also an AMA multi-national champion dirt tracker and multi land speed record holder. Mercer will continue to line up for the team in the major road races next year.
Rispoli said: “I am so excited to get the opportunity to race full time overseas and to do it in such a prestigious series as the British Superbike Championship is amazing. I have had some experience of the events at the final Brands Hatch rounds over the past two seasons and now this is a chance to have a full season to prove what we are capable of. I know I will need to learn the tracks but I think we can come to grips with that pretty fast and try and be pushing for some podiums and top positions throughout the season. I know it won’t be easy however I’m confident my team will do whatever it takes to make sure we have the best prepped equipment and testing program to get the job done. I want to thank team owner Keith Flint for believing in me and making this dream come true. I can’t wait to start testing on the track with the new bike, new crew and look forward to putting up a great result and an awesome show for all the fans.”
Flint concluded: “The time is right now for us to move to this level and I am really excited by the whole thing. I have been a fan of the championship for several years and that is the foundation of why I started a team in the first place. The feeling of this announcement is like the first time that the band played at Glastonbury; it is the big time. We have won back to back titles at club level in the endurance series and now it feels right to move to the next level. We want to be able to come out and fight for podiums, especially in this championship as I have followed it for over a decade. I have been a part of the paddock, watching the events but now it feels great to be part of it, rather than a musician spectating trackside. I am very passionate about the sport and now we can’t wait to get started next season.”
