Η πρώτη φωτογραφία τραβήχτηκε από τον Joseph -Nicephone Niepce το 1816 ήταν η πρώτη εικόνα φύσης και έγινε γνωστή με τον τίτλο θεά από το παράθυρο του . Ο ίδιος την ονόμασε “retinas“ (Αμφιβληστροειδείς χιτώνας ματιού)
Ήταν ένα αρνητικό και η εικόνα εξαφανίστηκε επειδή στο φως της ημέρας γίνεται απολύτως μαύρο.
Το 1826 κατάφερε να σταθεροποιήσει την εικόνα πάνω στο χαρτί . Έτσι άρχισε η τεχνολογία που επιτρέπει σήμερα να καταγράφονται εικόνες ανθρώπων ,γεγονότων γεωγραφικών περιοχών και διευκολύνεται η επικοινωνία .

Πρόκειται για τη μεγαλύτερη φωτογραφική μηχανή με την ονομασία «Mammoth» που ζύγιζε 635 κιλά μαζί με τη γυάλινη πλάκα του (225 κιλά) και απαιτούσε για το χειρισμό περίπου 15 άτομα. Κατασκευάστηκε στο Σικάγο μαζί με το ειδικό βαγόνι για τη μεταφορά του με εντολή της σιδηροδρομικής εταιρείας "Chicago and Alton" με σκοπό να φωτογραφηθεί το νέο πολυτελές τρένο της εταιρείας.

Η φωτογραφία του είχε διαστάσεις 1,4χ2,4 μέτρα και για την εμφάνισή της απαιτούσε 45 λίτρα χημικών διαλυμάτων.
Η Τεράστια φωτογραφία σε τεράστιο μέγεθος 1,4χ2,4 στάλθηκε στην διεθνή έκθεση στο Παρίσι , προκάλεσε μεγάλη αίσθηση και διαφημιστική επιτυχία της σιδηροδρομικής εταιρείας "Chicago and Alton"
Ολοκληρώνοντας αυτόν τον άθλο το «Mammoth», όπως το προϊστορικό όνομά του, εξαφανίστηκε, θύμα του μέγεθος και της δυσκολίας χειρισμού.

Μέχρι τότε τα πρωτεία κρατούσε ο Άγγλος Thurston Thomson που είχε κατασκευάσει το 1858, μία μηχανή με μήκος 3,6 μέτρα και οι φωτογραφίες ήταν 90χ90 cm.
Πολλοί άλλοι φωτογράφοι είχαν μηχανές με πλάκες μεγέθους 27,9x36,5 cm.
