Able and Baker
The first two monkeys to survive their trip into space are presented at a NASA press conference in 1959. Able, on the left, a seven-pound rhesus monkey, and Baker, an 11-ounce squirrel monkey from Peru, withstood forces 38 times the normal pull of gravity and endured weightlessness for about 9 minutes during their historic flight. Able died four days after returning to earth during a relatively simple surgery to remove an infected electrode. Baker lived until 1984.

Chimp in Training
In early 1961, just a few months before Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin launched into orbit, NASA was using chimps to help iron out the kinks in its Mercury program. Approximately 20 of them were trained at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico on equipment simulating space flight, like the rocket sled, above.

Robert Craig Knievel Jr. died in November after 69 years, which by all rights is more than twice as long as it should have taken him. The motorcycle stuntman was known for his astonishing leaps but even more for his crashes. With every boast, world record and broken bone, he became a bigger figure and graced more lunch boxes — particularly after his fall, on his rocket-boosted Skycycle, into Idaho's Snake River Canyon. That which did not kill Knievel — as he proved more literally than most — only made him, and his myth, stronger.

Το 1994, ο λαμπρός φωτογράφος ο σουδανέζος Kevin Carter κέρδισε το βραβείο Pulitzer με μια φωτογραφία που τραβήχτηκε στην περιοχή Ayod (ένα μικρό χωριό του Σουδάν), η οποία κυκλο-φόρησε σε όλο τον κόσμο.
Στην εικόνα η σκελετωμένη μορφή ενός μικρού κοριτσιού, σκυμμένου στη γη, εξαντλημένου από την πείνα, και στα πρόθυρα του θανάτου, ενώ στο βάθος, αναμένει ένας μαύρος γύπας προσεκτικά και περιμένει την ακριβή στιγμή του θανάτου του κοριτσιού.
Τέσσερις μήνες αργότερα, ο Kevin Carter έχασε τη ζωή του.
