Ducati no longer 'embarrassing' in MotoGP

MOTOGP NEWS

Ducati is no longer in an "embarrassing" position in MotoGP after the progress it has made during the 2014 season, according to sporting director Paolo Ciabatti.

The Italian team has not won a race since Casey Stoner's victory in the 2010 Australian Grand Prix, but '14 was its most encouraging campaign since then, as it closed the gap to the frontrunners and took three podium finishes with Andrea Dovizioso and Cal Crutchlow.

Ducati controversially opted to run under 'Open' regulations this year, allowing it more scope for development in exchange for running a standard ECU.

As this dispensation was originally intended for satellite and private teams, MotoGP adjusted the rules to create a halfway-house 'Factory 2' category for the Ducatis.

Ciabatti admitted that the rules breaks had helped Ducati regain competitiveness, but felt there was no option given the scale of the turnaround required.

"We are allowed to keep developing our bike with some concessions but that is what we needed because we ended 2013 with a very embarrassing gap to the top," he said.

"The main target for us was to be within 10 seconds of the winner. We achieved that.

"We have proved that we can be very fast in qualifying, and we achieved three podiums.

"Obviously we are quite pleased with the season. We are happy. We know that we still need to work hard."

He also praised Dovizioso's contribution, suggesting that the Italian was challenging Marc Marquez, Valentino Rossi, Jorge Lorenzo and Dani Pedrosa for a place among MotoGP's elite.

"There are four riders who are maybe in a special league, but we think that Dovizioso this year has been so strong, so consistent, so fast and we are very, very pleased," said Ciabatti.

Dovizioso stays on at Ducati for 2015, with Andrea Iannone promoted from the satellite Pramac team to join him after being given works equipment for much of this year.

Crutchlow has left the team after a single season and will ride for LCR Honda.

Yamaha Press Release: Q&A With Valentino Rossi - "I Am Still Here Because I Like To Prove Myself"
Submitted by Press Release on Tue, 2014-11-18 08:30
in

Yamaha
Valentino Rossi
MotoGP

With the MotoGP factory riders now finished their on-track work for 2014, the teams have time to reflect on their seasons. The Movistar Yamaha team has done so in a pair of press releases, containing interviews with their riders. Last week, we published the interview with Jorge Lorenzo, which means that this week, it is the turn of Valentino Rossi to look back at 2014. It was an outstanding year for Rossi, and he talks about his motivation, how the changes he made at the end of last year affected his performance, and what it takes to remain competitive at 35 years of age. Rossi makes his intention for 2015 perfectly clear: to be fighting for wins and for a title from the start of the next year:

Q: The 2014 season is over. Can you evaluate your performance?

Valentino Rossi: “I am very happy about my performance this season. The balance was very positive. For me this was the key season to decide my future. Last year I wasn’t very happy and I had to decide whether to continue or not. My target was to get to the front, fight with the top three riders and aim to get onto the podium every race. Last year this wasn’t always possible. I am happy that I was able to make it happen this year. I’ve made some big changes at the beginning of the season, but these have worked and I'm happy for that. Throughout this season I’ve always been strong in the race. I had good races and good battles.”

Q: What do you think about this year’s M1? At the beginning of the championship you suffered some lack of performances, but in the second part of the season the M1 won races with both you and Jorge.

VR: "Our M1 has improved a lot during the season, especially thanks to the good job done by both crews. Silvano, Ramon and all the engineers and technicians have worked very well. All together we were able to improve the bike to make it competitive and winning. It's a shame we weren’t able to improve the performance earlier on because most of the gap with Marc was created at the beginning of the season and then it became difficult to recover. If only we could start the season again now, things would go differently, but that's okay. What’s more important is that the bike has improved a lot and that it’s competitive now.”

Q: The results have been fantastic this season, the numbers speak for themselves. As a rider but also as a man, what does it mean to be back at such a high level?

VR: “It is a great satisfaction as both a rider and a man, because in recent years things had not gone well. The two years with Ducati were very difficult. Last year was a lot better but not enough for me to give everything I could, so I made some tough choices. They were bold, even risky, but now it’s a huge satisfaction to be here in Valencia after many podiums and a couple of victories. It makes me feel even more motivated and I’ve had a lot of fun, knowing that I’ve been competitive enough to win two races and have fought for the victory at almost every race with Lorenzo or Marquez, which was my target.”

Q: Which was the happiest moment throughout the season?

VR: “The best moment was the victory at Misano in front of all my fans. I managed to get back to first place in the Italian Grand Prix after five years and it was great. I loved that race. I really enjoyed myself and I felt really good emotions. However, I actually enjoyed the second victory more because at Misano I was a little too excited. In Phillip Island I was able to appreciate the win even more. I really enjoyed it!”

Q: After having returned to Yamaha for the last two seasons, what does it mean to you to be a Yamaha Rider?

VR: “I feel 100% a Yamaha rider in my heart. I had a long career and raced with several factory bikes, but the highlight of my career is undoubtedly with Yamaha. I love to work with the team and I really like the M1, so I'm happy to stay another two years with them. I take this opportunity to thank all the guys working on the Yamaha’s MotoGP program, who allowed me to achieve these excellent results. I want to thank everybody because it’s really a pleasure to work with all of them.”

GIOTIS750
19/11/2014, 17:33
Q: We know that you have prepared well physically and mentally after suffering the last three years. How were you able to make such a strong comeback?

VR: “I think the secret is to understand that you still want to be part of the game. To do so, you have to forget all the victories you've managed to get in the previous years and have a great humility. You also need to realise that, if you want to go on, you have to work hard. If you dwell too much on your past successes and say “well, I have won nine world titles and more than 100 races”, you’d rather stay home. The sport, your rivals, the tyres, your motorcycle, everything changes so instead you need to work more to be stronger. If you don’t, you’re finished.”

Q: The history of this sport has taught us that there are riders who suffered such experiences...

VR: “The question is ‘why am I still racing?’. I am still here because I like to prove myself. I still like to ride the bike on track and enjoy the races. I still have good reasons to be here after so many years.”

Q: Last year you said that you had to take a look at yourself; how much have you relaxed?

VR: “Well, examining yourself doesn’t mean you don’t believe in yourself in my opinion. I was not 100% sure, but I was pretty convinced I could do much better. I’ve competed with these riders during all these years and I was defeated sometimes, but other times I’ve won from them too. I was still racing, but when you turn 35 years old, your opponents are ten years younger than you. If you have to fight against them in three difficult seasons, it’s necessary to go over the situation in your head and realise that it might be you who’s the real problem.”

Q: In this second half of the season you have sent a clear message to your main rivals. How can you put more pressure on them and how can Yamaha help you to try to reach the tenth world title?

VR: “I still believe in it, as I always said. After this year even more because we are there at the front. We are really close to our rivals, but it will be difficult. Lorenzo will be stronger next year and Marquez won the world title by winning 13 races against my two. This means he won 11 more than me. The difference is huge. To fill this gap we have to work even better with the team, with Silvano, and also work hard with Yamaha to give us a hand. I think this year, especially at the beginning, Honda was much more competitive than our bike and the first half of the season was too easy for Marc. If we want to make life difficult for him, it’s necessary to be closer to him.”

Q: Regarding Marquez victories, when you won with a Honda bike everyone said it was the bike…

VR: “I felt sorry about this because when you win so many races the bike and you become one, together, and a growing symbiosis between rider and bike. The bike was a Honda, at that point the fastest of all, and I had a lot of success 10 years ago, but the pilot does his part and makes the difference. When I was doing this 10 years ago everyone was saying “ah, he wins because of the Honda”, but I have to thank them because of them I switched to Yamaha and it was great to prove I could win with another bike.”

Q: Many years have passed and you still always give the maximum input. As you look back to the past what do you see?

VR: “Ah, well ... a great joy for the rider and I'm very happy because I won a lot. I've won races and lived in a world that just gave me joy, so I remember it very positively.”

Q: And when you look ahead, not in the next few years but even further, along with the most attractive projects with the Academy, what do you see?

VR: “All projects look beautiful, I'm happy but I'm sorry that at some point I will have to stop racing. The team and the Academy will help but it will not be the same”.

Q: In last the press conference, all praised you, you're a legend, an extraordinary rider… How do you experience this?

VR: “With pride! Of course I'd like to be 25 years old rather than 35 but I feel great pride. I have so much respect for my opponents; many of them watched the races as little children and were supporting me!”

Q: What do you think about the last race of the season in Valencia ?

VR: “Valencia is always difficult for me. I've struggled a lot in the past. For me it’s a great achievement to take the pole position and to finish in second place, especially because this race was very difficult and the conditions were very dangerous. I tried to stay concentrated and not to make a mistake. It’s a bit of a shame that I started to suffer a little bit on the right side of the tyre, because I wasn’t so far from Marc, but it still has been a good season. We got second in the championship, a lot of podiums and two victories. Now, we have to work to be even better next year. I am very close to 300 points, but Marquez won a lot more races than me, so me and my team need to improve the Yamaha to try and stay closer during the whole season. The test is important because we have a lot of new stuff to test for next year, so it will be interesting.”

Q: After Valencia Test wraps up, there is a bit of time to relax. What will you do with your time?

VR: “After the tests we can relax at home. The Rally of Monza on the 30th of November is next. After that, December and January are the months that we can really go on holiday and I’d like to go snowboarding with my friends. Nothing special…

Comparing engine usage in 2014
Thursday, 20 November 2014

Engines were a much talked-about topic heading into the 2014 MotoGP™ season as the terms ‘Factory Option’ and ‘Open’ made plenty of headlines.

For those entering under the Factory Option banner (such as Repsol Honda Team and Movistar Yamaha MotoGP), the teams were subjected to new engine freeze regulations and the use of no more than five, sealed powerplants for the entirety of the season. On the other hand, Open entrants like Drive M7 Aspar were able to make use of up to 12 engines, which could be developed across the course of the campaign. Adding another variable into the mix, Ducati Team and Pramac Racing were granted special dispensation to run to Open regulations despite being Factory Option, having not won a race in fully dry conditions during the previous season.

Marc Marquez and Dani Pedrosa enjoyed a comfortable season, finishing the year on either their fourth or fifth engines which had progressed through barely half of their lifecycles; a remarkable feat bearing in mind that between them they racked up some 14,000 kilometres of running in practice sessions alone. Stressing how strict safety margins are to factor in any problems, neither LCR Honda MotoGP’s Stefan Bradl nor GO&FUN Honda Gresini’s Alvaro Bautista exceeded their five engine allocation despite each losing one engine from their allocation due to failures. For those racing Yamahas, engine life was certainly never a worry, with Jorge Lorenzo proving this with the fact that his fifth engine progressed through only a quarter of its working life.

Amongst the Open runners using the new Honda RCV1000R customer bike, Scott Redding (GO&FUN Honda Gresini) and Nicky Hayden (Drive M7 Aspar) went up to their 11th engine, while Hayden’s team-mate Hiroshi Aoyama was the only rider to use his maximum 12; this is perhaps reflected in the fact that the Japanese rider was the only representative on the grid to finish every one of the 18 Grands Prix this year, as well as having moved onto a 12th and final engine when he debuted the all-new 2015 customer Honda - the RC213V-RS - at the final event in Valencia. Top Open runner Aleix Espargaro (NGM Forward Racing) took only his ninth and tenth powerplants to the Ricardo Tormo circuit at Round 18; however, one of his engines had been damaged when he was hit by Stefan Bradl in Australia.

Things were arguably most complicated for the Ducati riders, as engines were swapped around as the different GP14, GP14.1 and GP14.2 models were raced during the season. Andrea Dovizioso exploited all twelve of the engines available to him, as did Andrea Iannone; old engines could not always be fitted when chassis were updated, as elements of the housing would need to be updated – contravening regulations. On the contrary, team-mate Cal Crutchlow received far fewer updates during the season and so would end the year on only his ninth powerplant.

Lorenzo: Force MotoGP riders to pit in the rain
25 November 2014
“I think if the white flag is waved and then all MotoGP riders have two laps to enter [the pits] it would be a good option” - Jorge Lorenzo.

StumbleUpon

When white flags are issued by Race Direction during a MotoGP race, allowing riders to swap machines due to rain, it should be compulsory for all riders to pit for their wet weather bikes.

That is the opinion of double world champion Jorge Lorenzo, who feels such a move would make the current 'flag-to-flag' system much safer. The bike swap option, introduced in 2005, is considered the 'least worst' solution to avoid stopping a race due to the arrival of rain.

However, as highlighted by accidents for Marc Marquez and Dani Pedrosa at Aragon, the system encourages riders - especially those leading in the closing stages - to risk staying on slicks due to the time lost by pulling into the pits.

Dani Pedrosa is thrown off his Repsol Honda will trying to remain on slicks tyres in the Aragon rain. Race leader Marc Marquez fell soon after for the same reason.

Lorenzo timed his own bike change to perfection for victory at Aragon, but would later lose out after pitting unnecessarily when light rain began falling in the Valencia finale.

“In my opinion for the show, for the entertainment, [flag-to-flag] is very good,” Lorenzo said at Sepang, the round before his ill-timed Valencia pit stop.

“For the safety of the riders I believe that it is not the best option. I understand that stopping a race for live television is difficult, but to race with slicks in my opinion is too dangerous.

“I said that one possibility is when the white flag is waving, to make the riders enter [the pits]. Don't say 'it's raining, you can now enter the pits if you want'. Instead say 'you must enter'. This would be good.

“I think if the white flag is waved and then all riders have two laps to enter [the pits] it would be a good option. But they didn't like my proposal so I think it will stay the same.”

The problem is that, while rain may be falling in one area, which would currently prompt Race Direction to make bike swaps an option, the rest of the track may still be too dry for wet tyres.

A minimum number of marshal posts reporting rain could be used as a trigger for enforcing bike swaps, but that still wouldn't take into account the difference between light drizzle and a heavy downpour.

Perhaps the easiest solution would be to set a cut-off maximum lap time, averaged between the race leaders, to determine if a circuit has become too dangerous for slicks and that all riders yet to change bikes must now do so.

For example, 10 seconds slower than the best (dry) lap of the weekend, or 110% percent of that lap time, to take into account track length. If no dry laps had been completed prior to the race, the official circuit record could be used.

The downside is that race leaders would then have further motivation to push on slicks, in order to stay under the target lap time. However with slicks losing their grip if not being 'worked' hard enough, cruising is not an option.

The rumoured return of intermediate tyres for the new Michelin era in 2016 could also strengthen the case for forced pit stops, with riders (or more precisely their teams) able to choose intermediate or wets for the second bike.

Among the other changes considered to make flag-to-flag safer was for each rider to wait for a fixed period of time (for example ten seconds) at their pit garage while changing bikes.

This was aimed at trying to improve pit lane safety, but would be difficult to monitor and, unless used in conjunction with compulsory bike swaps, would make riders even less inclined to pit due to further time lost.

Dorna director Javier Alonso pledged to look at ways to make flag-to-flag racing safer, alongside the removal of artificial grass, following the Aragon round.

Galbraith: Rossi points to 10th title - GPOne.com
During the season of the championship we are used to seeing him at the wall. This time Silvano Galbusera takes off the clothes of chief mechanic, to wear as a spectator . The occasion for the Monza Rally Show, where the engineer Yamaha could not resist the charm of the four wheels, just like Lin Jarvis, present on Friday to race Brianza.

Even in Monza you wanted to watch Valentino?

" We are now inseparable - smiles - of course I came here for a ride. The Monza Rally is a race very spectacular, also there are many champions and many fans of the sport. Now that the season is over on two wheels, it's a way to always stay close to the engines . "

Even here Vale was able to find an opponent able to give him a hard time. It is not a Spaniard, but a Pole.

" I have seen, on this occasion Valentino not have it easy. It 's definitely a nice heads up the one with Kubica, which are detached from a few seconds. Among other things, Lin Jarvis came on a tour and they told me who was very fascinated by this rally . "

About a year ago began your experience in Yamaha. Initially there was a bit 'of concern about this change wanted by Rossi, but in the end it was a safe bet.

" True, there was some doubt on the part of the public, but in the end they spoke the results. I think it was a year very favorable. Valentino was immediately put on his head that had to again give a hard and, step step, we managed to reach an important goal . "

Vale was very clear at the end of the season, saying that next year you point to the tenth title.

" Usually the season is that it always points to improve the previous one , so the goal can only be getting the top spot at the end of the season . "

Yamaha that you found in found in the first test?

" We found a competitive bike, although I believe there are significant growth potential . In MotoGP every aspect makes a difference, because the pilot alone is not enough. In Spain we have been working on some details, on which we will have improvements in sight the Sepang test . "

On what we will be working primarily?

" On detached and seamless exchange . I also think that the electronic games a key factor in this MotoGP. We have to get prepared to the first test of 2015, to begin the next season taking immediately head to the Honda . "

Batman would like to be Marc Marquez!!!

http://gpxtra.com/2014/12/02/batman-would-like-to-be-marc-marquez/

328085

Batman star Christian Bale has said that if he could be anybody else, it would reigning MotoGP World Champion Marc Marquez.

As we all know, Marc Marquez is now a four time Grand Prix World Champion. Wow-ing us every weekend with gravity defying riding that leaves us breathless, but it now appears that his talents are also greatly appreciated in Hollywood.

Tom Cruise is a well know MotoGP fan, but Marc Marquez has attracted a new fan in the shape of British actor, and star of the Christopher Nolan Batman film, Christian Bale. Bale has been in films such as American Hustle and The Fighter, as well as staring as Batman in the three hugely successful feature films.

“If I could be another person, I would choose the Spanish rider Marc Marquez,” confessed the actor speaking to Fotogramas ahead of his latest blockbuster ‘Exodus: Gods and Kings’.

“I would love to be like him. I don’t ride bikes so much any more, but he is the king. He’s like a God on his bike.”

Bale won’t be starting as Batman in the new Batman vs Superman film due for 2016, so we won’t see any 93’s on the BatBike, or Bruce Wayne on a RC213V when fighting whatever villain tackles Gotham.

Marquez has been called many things during his meteoric rise in Grand Prix racing, but God will be a new one to him. If Rossi is the GOAT, does Marquez have the opportunity to be the God?

That remains to be seen, what is sure, is that everybody is stunned by what this man is achieving on a MotoGP machine – even Batman!

Paolo Ciabatti heaps praise on Iannone

328115

By Aaron Rowles on December 6, 2014 in MotoGP News, News

Ducati Corse sporting director Paolo Ciabatti has said that new factory recruit Andrea Iannone has immense talent, and he wasn’t surprised at the success he had in 2014, despite his 2013 form.

Iannone signed for the satellite Pramac Ducati team for the 2013 season, and despite the occasional showing of impressive speed, crashes and inconsistent form marred the Italians progress, and there were even suggestions that he could loose his ride for 2014. Constantly racing through injuries and the slow progress of the Moto2 third place man from 2012, made 2014 a high pressure season for him.

After keeping his ride for 2014, Iannone repaid the extra faith from Ducati. Staying in the Pramac team, but on a factory bike, he out-performed new factory recruit Cal Crutchlow, and finished the 2014 season in tenth place, ahead of Crutchlow, and team mate Yonny Herenandez.

His tenth place finish, and five front row starts was enough to earn Iannone a seat in the full Factory Ducati side, alongside compatriot Andrea Dovizioso for 2015, with Crutchlow opting out of his contract for 2015. Something Ciabatti feels is Crazy Joe’s natural progression.

“I tried very hard a year ago, to make sure his contract was extended with an option for 2014, although his performances in 2013 were not always so positive,” Ciabatti explained to speedweek.com.

“But we must not forget: first and foremost, the bike was a problem last year, and secondly, Andrea was in his rookie season. He had falls, and then surgery. But I think Andrea has huge talent, he has moved forward in 2014.

“Sure, he has made some mistakes this season, but who doesn’t?

“Andrea has shown in 2014, what I expected, and I have given him credit for these results. I am glad that he has realised and implemented his talent.”

Iannone has enjoyed a relatively successful start to his stint as a full Factory Ducati rider, finishing the in fifth position during the end of season Valencia test, half a second off of Jorge Lorenzo’s fastest time. As well as just 0.1 seconds off of Andrea Dovizioso’s fastest time in the Jerez test at the end of the month, and all this on the GP14.2. The new Ducati isn’t due until the first Sepang test at the beginning of February.

Yamaha content with two-rider Open class effort

Yamaha content with two-rider Open class effort

Yamaha bosses have denied being disappointed at the lack of interest in its successful Open class YZR-M1 project for 2015.

Forward Racing rider Aleix Espargaro dominated the new Open class, which was created in 2014 to make more affordable and more competitive machinery available to non-factory teams.

Yamaha supports Forward Racing with an engine and chassis package, and Spaniard Espargaro excelled with some outstanding performances last season, which included a pole position in Assen and five top six finishes.

That included a historic first Open class podium in a rain-hit Motorland Aragon clash in late September when Espargaro finished runner-up behind compatriot Jorge Lorenzo.

But the impressive performance of the Open YZR-M1, which benefits from softer tyres and extra fuel, has not convinced a team other than Forward Racing to strike a deal for 2015.

Yamaha was willing to offer an additional two bikes for the Open category next season but race boss Lin Jarvis said it was not disappointing that the project won’t be expanded, confirming that it is not a money making venture for the Japanese brand.

Jarvis told MCN: “We are content to deal with Forward Racing. Our main goal is to run the Factory team and Tech 3, so this is an additional project that we are doing to support the championship. The more teams we have won’t improve anything for us. We don’t make money on the project and it requires resources to support it. What is important for us is to have a good quality team, so with Forward Racing contracting good quality riders to fight to win win the Open class again next year, we are extremely happy. We don’t need four or six riders, we are happy with two.”

Living in Andorra
15th December 2014
There has been a lot of talk about Andorra lately, mostly surrounding the news that current MotoGP champion Marc Marquez maybe coming to live here.

My wife and I have lived in Andorra quite some years now. We came here before we had children while I raced motorcycles and now the oldest child is a teenager. Andorra has changed a lot over those years. I thought now may be a good time to explain what its like for us living in Andorra and why the Crafar's are still living here today, long after my motorcycle racing career has finished.
